Do most people keep gas and electricity with the same supplier?

Do you all have your Gas & Electric with the same supplier?

I always have in the past and my direct debit was one payment.

New house was set up to British Gas which is two direct debits which annoys me. I’m looking at the switch service and it seems some companies are cheaper for Gas but others Electric.

This made me wonder what other people do?

Yes. We’ve always done so.

I think a lot do extra discount if you buy both from one supplier

MorrisonsPlatter · Today 16:09

I recommend Octopus

We check regularly, and switch if an alternative supplier is cheaper. This year we got an EV and BG were appalling at trying to get info. Chat bots that put me in a loop and getting nowhere, hung on the line for an answer. Not being able to get the info from their website. Octopus were brilliant in comparison, so we switched to their EV tariff. And so far happy with every aspect.
A few years ago there were loads of small suppliers and we used to switch virtually every year for our shop, which used a lot more than home. In the space of a few years at least 2 of our suppliers went bust, which made us think we had the cheapest!.

We've always been with BG for both, never had any issues.

Londonrach1 · Today 16:18

No. It took me 10 days to escape British gas when we moved They charged me 150 for those ten days. Which reminds me now the six months had passed and they still not bothered to contact me I can put a complaint in.

JumpingRabbit · Today 16:22

I’m finding it hard to find anything cheaper then BG variable rate but then heard it’s all going up again in July so not sure what to do.

I think you used to get a discount to take both from the same supplier, but I'm not sure you do any more.

Plus I don't think there's that much variation in prices, the best you can hope for is a small discount from the price cap, it could be that it's only worth taking them from separate suppliers if you have an unusual gas/electricity split.

XenoBitch · Today 16:24

I am with BG for both, but have 2 direct debits that go to them.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · Today 16:25

I go on the MSE price comparison tool energy club . Just fixed with E-on for a year .

Had British Gas as our supplier of gas forever. My parents had them, and so did DH and I when we started living together 35-ish years ago. Had the MEB for our electricity, then started using British Gas for that too when they started offering it in the late 1990s. They offered 'duel fuel' and we saved about 10% overall on the yearly energy bill.

No complaints about them as a provider, but when something goes wrong they are difficult to deal with. Speaking to the people in their service centre is fucking hard work.

They spent a lot of time and energy trying to bully me into having a smart meter too, until I put it an official complaint about them. (2 years ago.) They were badgering me every few weeks. They asked me 'but why....? WHY are you refusing smart meters?' I said 'I'm not having smart meters because I don't WANT them. As far as I'm concerned, not wanting them is a good enough reason to not have them! No-one HAS to have them and I don't want them!'

Since I complained and threatened to leave them if they didn't stop bullying me they have left me alone.

dementedpixie · Today 16:28

I ended up with Home Energy as they were cheaper than my Octopus offers.

This does my head in, I don’t know why it bothers me so much. I’ve always only had one payment with any other company.

It's a typical Tory snafu, that doesn't benefit the consumer in any way. Bizarrely at one point I was buying my gas from EDF and my electricity from British Gas, go figure that one out.
