It's part of their cultural heritage ffs.

Who the hell is criticising this? In fact don't bother. Who else is it going to be. 🙄

It's so damn hard being on the left when the purity police continue to embarrass us every minute of every damn day.

‘The Vikings were slavers, and the kidnapping, sale and forced exploitation of human beings was always a central pillar of their culture’

Tens of thousands of Britons were enslaved or sold on as slaves by Vikings.

I feel very wronged by this.

Haaland and his mates should pay restitution.

Where do I apply?

Wonderful example of the Daily Mail whipping up lefty hate.

Nobody is really bothered with this, how far did they have to delve to find someone who was?

Ragebait, and it works.

And they're on a sticky wicket as regards Nazism, given their past, and indeed a lot of their present.

JoanChitty · Today 17:29

This is their culture so surely they are allowed to embrace it ? Many years ago Dh and I used to go to a lot of bike meets. Our club had a branch in Denmark and the Danes would often wear Viking helmets . No one took offence .

How on earth are rune symbols neo-Nazi when runes were used over a thousand years before the the Nazi's?!

It's not chauvinistic. Viking women were incredibly strong. They did heavy work and could fight to defend in case of attack. They had a lot more rights and freedoms compared to women in other societies and were more equal to men. Many Viking women's graves have been found with valuable items in which means they were highly respected.

It's part of their culture and it's been done respectfully IMO.

Makes me feel abit funny in the tummy/ knees.

I had a dream about Haaland, I was on the bus and I was struggling with my shopping, he helped me carry it home, I have felt very fond of him since 😉

😂

I had a similar dream in that I was driving and got a flat tyre and he stopped to help me change it. I have had a soft spot since. 😜

BeardySchnauzer · Today 17:32

I don’t think anyone is allowed to do anything these days without someone finding a problem.

if they’d photographed the team with their dogs there would be people up in arms that cats weren’t included

HRTQueen · Today 17:23

I take it you have decided to not share all of your dream MrsCompayson

Yeah...you have to have some fun in your life don't you?

JustaDream · Today 17:32

Obviously nothing excuses the pillaging all those years ago, etc etc.....

🙄

I can't wait until we circle back to sanity. Hopefully, it's before I die but we'll see.

Is the guy that wrote the article ok with America hosting part of the world cup,

I'm sure i read somewhere he has a part in a film as one soon. So he's just in rehearsal there.

What would the England team do? Bowler hats and suits? Tudor tunics and hose? Georgian wigs? The Mail are just jealous.

Well they could go a little further back, wear loin cloths (or not) and cover themselves in woad

ClairDeLaLune · Today 17:36

It’s problematic that they haven’t come round my house to see me 😭 😭

Thank you for the photo OP ❤️

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Today 17:38

Hurdy gurdy. Or is that Sweden?! Not my usual type but let’s see when they’re on the pitch. 😉

😆this is sad but true at the same time - made me giggle!

Obviously, it doesn't excuse when dogs killed cats and cats ate mice etc etc

Kbcdtyijgd · Today 17:41

They look bloody brilliant, I’ve come over all peculiar

HoldMyWine · Today 17:42

I think they look magnificent. Why does everything have to be over thought?

If you want to find out more about strong Viking women then I can only encourage you to read about the female warrior on Birka near Stockholm. Archeologists assumed she was male because of the full set of weapons and the richness of her grave. Better still, visit Scandavia yourself and you might just be lucky enough to bump into a modern day Viking (need a hot flush emoji)

It must be exhausting being a sanctimonious wanker looking for offense in everything. Thank god nobody I know IRL is like that!

misscockerspaniel · Today 17:43

I wonder if they are doing a calendar.

Will now be supporting Norway in the World Cup.❤

There were some badass female Vikings...Lagertha being the most famous. There were also female Viking warriors known as Shieldmaidens who often fought alongside the men.

If it annoys the Trumpian Yanks, it's bloody great.

BTW is anyone actually going to this WC? I thought it would be a total flop ticket wise.

HotGazpacho · Today 17:47

There is probably some idiot somewhere screeching about cultural appropriation😜

I’d imagine it’s less about cultural appropriation and more that certain right-wing groups have co-opted the Viking aesthetic as a form of master race bollocks. It’s the same ilk as certain groups yammering about Anglo-Saxons as being the true English. I confess though, I haven’t seen the article and won’t click on the Daily Mail.

ETA: is it the Mail doing the complaining? If so, they can get fucked.

What would the England team do?

Presumably take all their clothes off, braid their hair and paint themselves blue. So that's something to look forward to.
