To think a Sunday Dinner can follow the Mediterranean diet?

itrezcbmko · 05/06/2026 14:38

Obviously not made with beef and Yorkshire puddings.

I have started following the Mediterranean diet, which a couple of friends also do, and we were chatting about it. Somehow I also mentioned that I’d had a roast dinner on Sunday, which was deemed now following the diet. I know I can break it whenever I like, but surely this does follow the ‘rules’.

Skinless chicken breast, new potatoes (boiled), carrots and broccoli roast with olive oil, sweetcorn, peas, and cabbage, with gravy.

Maybe the gravy doesn’t fit but surely this largely does follow the Mediterranean diet? Is it just because it’s such a British meal that it’s not deemed good enough?

You didn’t have a roast or a Mediterranean diet meal!

Treetopssofee · 05/06/2026 16:34

Eating supermarket grade feta and olive oil is NOT the equivalent of blue zone eating in Greece

The equivalent would be cooking in British cold pressed rapeseed oil and eating locally made goats cheese with whatever organic local veg is in season and some quality British meat or fish

Not shopping the "Mediterranean isle" in Sainsbury's

wishingonastar101 · 05/06/2026 16:44

That is neither 'Mediterranean' nor is it 'roast dinner'.

Why was there sweetcorn?

Peridot1 · 05/06/2026 16:49

Was that aimed at me @Treetopssofee? I didn’t mention blue zone eating. Just Mediterranean. It may not be perfect but it’s definitely more Mediterranean in style. And can be done with good quality olive oil and decent feta.

Fizzybluewater · 05/06/2026 17:03

Just eat what you want, don't fuss around with a wanky l'ook at me diet' and get on with it without the 'drama'.

NiftyKoala · 05/06/2026 17:12

That doesn't sound like a roast or Mediterranean meal.

Firesidechatter · 05/06/2026 17:14

I like, your style, with the right emphasis you can make anyrtning the med diet,

chicken curry, chicken, rice, ok the curry sauce, (like the gravy) onions, garlic,,,😂

maddiemookins16mum · 05/06/2026 17:17

One of our favourite Sunday Dinners is Greek lemon chicken and potatoes. I could literally eat it every day!

YABU for describing that monstrosity as a roast dinner.

Ha ha. Roast pork, stuffing with sausage meat, roasts, steamed potatoes, cabbage, carrots, peas, parsnips- that's a Sunday roast 😋

ReflectingPool · 05/06/2026 17:31

Skinless chicken breast, new potatoes (boiled), carrots and broccoli roast with olive oil, sweetcorn, peas, and cabbage, with gravy

Sounds good to me OP, not sure it sounds very Mediterranean though, or like a traditional Sunday dinner. I'd probably choose it over a trad Sunday dinner though. Not because it's nicer but prob a bit healthier. Every little helps.

ReflectingPool · 05/06/2026 17:33

chicken curry

Now you're talking.

ReflectingPool · 05/06/2026 17:34

please roast some spuds for them, you don't have to put any on your plate

I think any sunday/christmas dinner should have roast AND mash.

Sweetcorn and mashed potatoes mixed in your mouth with gravy is the food of the gods. Made do with new potatoes so as to cut out the butter but still delicious.

Not sure how meat and veg that’s been roasted isn’t a roast dinner.

It sounds like you have taken two cuisines and managed to make the most depressing meal possible out of both of them!
Have a roast dinner or don't but it seems a bit daft to make a British staple like a roast dinner into something it isn't (and arguably much less nice).

Faveway · 05/06/2026 18:25

That was not a roast dinner. Anyway, what's the harm in a diet-breaking meal every now and then? 😁

Squirrelblanket · 05/06/2026 16:04

Peas, sweetcorn and boiled potatoes do not belong on a roast dinner.

I beg your pardon? Peas are a roast dinner staple in my house! 😝

Terfarina · 05/06/2026 19:26

sweetcorn and boiled cabbage should never share a plate

LifeIsAMeatball · 05/06/2026 19:31

I have no idea what the “Mediterranean diet” is but I am Greek and we frequently have Greek roast dinners.

I’d mostly like to tell you all that Naxos potatoes are renowned. They make the world’s best chips. If they’re not in the official diet, I’m out 😆

Frazzledinmyforties · 05/06/2026 19:31

As someone who grew up on an actual Mediterranean diet, what you have described @itrezcbmko doesn’t sound remotely Mediterranean. Is it supposed to be for weight loss or overall health?
My Sunday dinners were things like the lemon chicken and potatoes mentioned above, slow cooked lamb with bulgar wheat, stuffed vegetables (peppers, aubergines, courgettes), pork joint with orzo.

ReflectingPool · 05/06/2026 19:49

OMG I hate sweetcorn! I'd have to spit it out unless in company.

People have such different tastes, don't they? I hate parsnips too. Anything with a hint of sweetness. I mean, my mil puts sultanas in curry. Eeeew.

Agree. It's nothing without peas.

This is what I was thinking, if you roast the meat and the veg then surely its a roast dinner? What elsedo you need for a roast dinner? I hate roast potatoes so whenever I go for a carvery I dont have them, does that mean I am not having a roast dinner?

mumnosbest · 05/06/2026 20:51

It can't be a Sunday roast without a Yorkshire pud, mash and stuffing. It's also not Mediterranean without olives, salad, cheese surely.

I'm a Yorkshire lass married to a Mediterranean man. Our Sunday dinner is usually a roast meat with roast potatoes in olive oil. I have the typical Yorkshire pud, mash, stuffing and gravy with some roasted peppers, aubergines, peppers. My DH has the meat and roasties with salad (olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and feta cheese). We have the best of both and dip in and out of the sides, depending how we feel but I can't mix salad and gravy 🤣

I don’t like sultanas either or parsnips either. I love sweet potatoes roasted but can’t stand them as ‘chips’.

I think people are just trying to insinuate that they have dinners with a choice of lamb, pork and beef every Sunday (basted with goose fat) with overflowing bowls of stuffing, three types of potatoes, homemade Yorkshire puddings, parsnips and turnip, jugs of homemade gravy etc etc.

Which is lovely if you’re at the pub or it’s Easter Sunday but I grew up with Sunday dinners being slices of roast pork or ham or chicken, mashed potato, sweetcorn (these were the three non-negotiables), then peas, carrots, cabbage, maybe cauliflower, and Bisto. It was the height of excitement if Aunt Bessie’s yorkshires or stuffing made the plate. Always eaten on our knees in front of the EastEnders omnibus. It was very much a normal Sunday dinner.

I just make it for myself now and stick with it, although it never tastes quite as nice.
