Help me solve this dispute with my husband (lighthearted)

OK so this debate has become increasingly heated and I need mumsnetters to settle it! I want to get this personalised picture book I have seen for our son’s birthday in July - he is turning 3 - about football/friendship and you can choose kit colour for the main character (and their hair, name etc - it’s meant to be him in the story).

So here’s the (lighthearted) marriage breaking decision - I wanted to choose a blue kit as this is my son’s favourite colour, my husband insists I should choose black and white stripes for Newcastle (his team). I get that my son will likely support Newcastle one day but right now he is little and he loves blue (and maybe I secretly think the storybook will look prettier with blue!).

Anyway please vote, I’ll take the mumsnet decision as binding!

YABU - Pick Newcastle stripes, it’s a story about football, bonding with his dad, etc

YANBU - pick blue as your son will love it, you prefer it (and this is your present idea!)

I could probably grab screenshots of what the character looks like in each colour if helpful

Has your husband got a Newcastle kit so your son would even know what it was? You’d have to get him a Newcastle top because it’s supposed to be him in the book

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 18:21

I think that’s one if the closest votes I’ve ever seen on mn. Not sure we’ve helped you in your marital dispute.

Your mistake was discussing it with dh in the first once!

Yeah to me even at that age you know that football kit isn't just meant to be your favourite colour. It's for your team. He'll be exposed to it via his dad so that presumably will be his team? I think it would be more realistic and cute to have it as that.

But also I hate Chelsea 🤣

Agree. Particularly with the last sentence.

Has to be Newcastle kit .

expertdillydally · Yesterday 18:28

@Pickledonions12 @BillieWiper I could move away from Chelsea blue with some red shorts perhaps!

Sharing here the options in case this helps people see my point about being more colourful. But I also get the message here that I can’t be messing with football!

I know @Silverbirchleaf - I feel I am still in the game! 😅

I’ve gone to football with my dad for as long as I remember. A personalised book with ‘me’ wearing a kit that isn’t ours would’ve been strange. Don’t do it!

Not helpful, but the Newcastle kit looks better.

expertdillydally · Yesterday 18:48

And to answer everyone’s questions, my husband has got a Newcastle shirt but he doesn’t wear it very much. He doesn’t go to games really, he is more of an at-home match watcher.

Blue for your son & another book with a shirt in black & white with DH's name etc/DH can have his own one?

This. Father's Day is coming up!! Shame it's first though. Maybe wait until DH's birthday.

expertdillydally · Yesterday 18:50

Et tu @Silverbirchleaf! 😅

I actually think the Newcastle kit looks better.

is there a blue stripe kit?

But that's you. They don't go to games.

Haha, the light blue and red is moving towards my team so I'm gonna go biased again.

But honestly the Newcastle one looks cute. And I like the idea of it helping him bond with his dad? They're both sweet though and you're right it doesn't really matter x

Harhar · Yesterday 18:56

Oh ok. Disregard everything I’ve said op. @JuneJoys doesn’t approve.

It’s sweet idea, I think him wearing a kit that will more than likely feature in his life would be better.

expertdillydally · Yesterday 18:57

@JuneJoys Yes I can do blue stripes - there are loads of options actually, I can do patterns like this. I can also do a hairstyle perhaps more reflective of how often I take my son to a hairdresser 😅

Get the Newcastle colours and your DH get him a Newcastle kit. Then it will be him the book in his kit.

This is such a great idea I'm tempted to steal it.

expertdillydally · Yesterday 19:01

@Harhar yes it is a sweet idea, I think I will be persuaded on the dad bonding angle. And good to know people think the black and white kit looks good!

I would like to point out the vote is still split 45/55 - I think I’m still respectably holding my corner! My husband is smiling way too much.

No one has suggested this option but I could just make one for myself! I’m quite enjoying playing about with the character thing. Why should my husband have all the fun!

Blue stripes, its the best compromise and I think it looks brighter too.
