People from other countries - they’re just better than us, aren’t they?

I’m on holiday in the Balkans and like everytime I go overseas, it’s difficult not to conclude people from other countries are just better than us.

Immaculately kept, litter free, great service in bars and restaurants by experienced staff, polite well behaved kids eating out in restaurants, not a screen in sight. Everyone generally better looking, better dressed.

Or do I have rose tinted holiday goggles on?

I think this when I go to Italy. I always say to my partner, ‘The Italians have really got their shit together’. The culture, the food, the wine, the clothes, the language…it all feels so relaxed yet exuberant.

Bit of a shame about the corruption and organised crime though.

I also think there's a touch of thinking they are better than everyone else.

I have noted that foreigners- including those from my own country- who come to the UK with a chip on their shoulders often do badly. Mistaking the natural reserve of a British person for racism and arrogance is counter productive.

If anything, I find most British people too self- deprecating!

My last holiday was in Rome, so let's compare that with our own capital of London, where I live and work (albeit live out in the suburbs). In the centre of Rome, we were struck by the higher amount of litter and graffiti. We went a few tube stops to spend half a day in a large city park, probably the equivalent of Hyde Park. There was a stream runnning through it - choked up with litter, plastic bags and what seemed like old clothes.

My abiding memory from visiting French tourist towns was the amount of dog shit on the streets.

Oh but the food in Rome… so delicious, and those beautiful churches behind ordinary doors, and walking on stones that ancient Romans walked on.. That’s what I remember not graffiti or litter And what you mainly remember most about French tourist towns is dog shit? Blimey.

eurochick · 31/05/2026 22:06

I sort of see your point but at least we haven’t started murdering our neighbours within my lifetime.

Well let's just say in my workplace for example, there a mixture of nationalities. The English people that work there are all the coldest ones. Very difficult to have any kind of a chat with them. They are all cold

Is it a 'you' problem do you think?

Why are you on another thread saying you're from the UK then? I am not going to bother replying to you anymore you're clearly just making stuff up as you go along.

On what thread? Im on loads of threads. Use your brain. I can be both. people for example who moved here from Poland and lived in UK for a long time, will say they are originally from Poland, and now they are from the UK.

Vivienne1000 · 31/05/2026 22:08

Well having seen how France reacted to their WIN in the European Championships, literally vandalising their own country, no I don’t think that. I think most British people are decent.

No. Seeing as the OP had the same problem

They would not then describe themselves as being foreign when in Poland.

Scarlettjune hates the UK and the people. Anyone else is better, in their eyes.
Absolute waste of time and space engaging.

Some might say, they are full of shit.

Yes you're originally from the UK (like the Polish people are originally from Poland in your example) and are now trying to say you're a foreigner in the UK.

I agree op. We’ve gone to shit and we’re not going to be able to fix it if we can’t admit it.

Well this is a sweeping generalisation. No we have not all gone to shit. I live in rural SE England, a part of the country which is stereotypically unfriendly and it’s anything but. I haven’t found other parts of England unfriendly either, including London.

Yes it’s awful. Obviously you do know that it isn’t all ‘the French’ though don’t you? Like Brits most people are generally decent including the French.

I don't think that many people can argue that Italy is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries on earth. However the last time that I went there with two male friends, we took a bus in Rome and they ended up having to surround me to stop the groping hands from complete strangers.

As I said, good and bad in all countries, this one is no exception.

MrsHattie · 31/05/2026 20:22

Come on, I’d love to agree but we do have an issue with that.

I'm not saying that we don't, I just think the perception is exacerbated by the assumption that every rowdy holiday maker is a Brit.

The Spanish have always stood out to me, whether in Italy, Croatia, Finland, and in Spain too.

Pistachiocake · 31/05/2026 22:15

Some are, some aren't. Just like anywhere in the UK.

Yes, the vast majority of the human race are decent. It's always the horrible ones that make the news.

Yes of course. But I am trying to say, no people overseas are not better than us. That was just one tiny example. There are also wonderful people in France and here too.

It is coldness.

Open your hearts.

Maybe they can sense the true you. If you were a bit more warm you would get it back. Plenty of English in the north are friendly.

She is English, or from the UK anyway. I hope she's ok actually I don't think she's very happy.

I think people are kinder than you think Scarlett maybe let them in a bit.

We Brits have a fantastic film and TV industry; and I think many of our shows are much better than American ones.

The director of the French film Amelie said that there is very little film industry in France; most of the studio scenes were filmed in Germany. He also said that they had to do a lot of “cleaning up” litter and other detritus in Paris to make it presentable, especially in the train station.

Every country will present their good side to the rest of the world. The other stuff… they don’t talk about that.

I believe the Americans admire British actors because they are much better trained in the art.
