AIBU to ask if this arm wound needs attention? Contains a bloody pic of said wound

I feel like such an idiot. I missed a step on my ladders and fell my arse. I'm absolutely fine apart from a bruised knee and a nasty hole iny arm. I'm not entirely sure if it's something I can manage at home or if it needs medical attention. Only issue is I have severe agoraphobia and currently can't leave my home. Nothing else hurts, I didn't hit my head and it's cleaned and covered. It's smaller than a 50p and not particularly deep (just bloody sore ATM!)

Thoughts please?

Thank you!

can't see a photo. but the NHS says you only need to see a doctor if a cut is deep or big or has debris in it

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cuts-and-grazes/

what did you land or on hit to cause the cut?

There's stupid boxing under the radiator and I caught the corner with my arm.

No, it's stopped I think. ☺️ I've got a dressing over it and then a bandage over for a bit of compression.

We really need to know what you mean by "not particularly deep".

It's hard for me to tell but it doesn't look like it's too deep. I've tried a couple of times to link to a pic and my posts have been deleted.

Oh that does look quite nasty.. really it looks like it might need attention.

Gabbycat245 · 25/05/2026 23:59

OP give it a clean, and if you have any, stick some steri strips on it.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 26/05/2026 00:01

You can’t tell much from that photo. Personally I would just wash it with lots of water or saline solution if you have it. And just keep an eye. It doesn’t look like you need any stitches or any special dressings and I can’t see how that would have caused any major damage

BringBackCatsEyes · 26/05/2026 00:03

If that were my wound I'd clean it, cover it and see how it was in the morning.
It's not bleeding a lot and there doesn't seem to be anything embedded.

BravebutBroken · 26/05/2026 00:03

You probably need to leave your dressing and bandage on to stem the bleeding and then review what it looks like in the morning. Or at least that's what I would do. It's hard to know how deep it is while it's still filled with blood. You could call the doctors surgery in the morning and ask them to arrange a nurse to visit you. If it bleeds through your bandage though it definitely needs seeing sooner.

Ladamesansmerci · 26/05/2026 00:05

Just seen the pic, it'll be fine. Just cover it and try and pull the edges together a little with steri strips. Keep it clean, and keep an eye out for spreading redness or other sings of infection.

I used to self-harm, and there's no way I'd have sought treatment for that. The actual size of the wound isn't large. I truly don't think they would stitch that due to the size. You'll probably get a nice scar, but you'll also be surprised how quickly it starts to heal.

I'd only get that seen if it looked infected or if it was somewhere like my hand or my face.

Obviously if you are not confident managing wounds and would like it looking at, get an out of hours, or send your GP a pic in the morning.

Blueberrymuffinsforthewin · 26/05/2026 00:09

Hi OP.
I specialise in injuries (obviously shouldn't take medical advice from someone online as I could be anyone but posting some advice anyway due to your agoraphobia) so whilst it's not that deep you have gone through all the layers of skin and the fleshy lumps you can see is subcutaneous fat. When did you do it as looks quite dry and older than 6 hours (which is the optimum time to close a wound) but it could just look like that because of the heat. Depending on age/medical history if it's a 'fresh' wound I'd either suture or paper stitch it. If it is older then we generally leave them to secondary close - basically heal itself but it then takes longer to heal and has more chance of becoming infected.

Anarchy99 · 26/05/2026 00:56

What does NHS website say?

That might be more helpful than a chat board?

Pansypots · 26/05/2026 00:58

It happened at about 10pm

Thank you. I don't have any steri strips, just various plasters and dressings. I can probably get some delivered tomorrow if it'll be worth using them then?

You've had jolly good advice from other posters. I hope you get a reasonable night's sleep. My only thought is whether you migjt need a tetanus jab but you would have to go out for that.

I hope you are getting help to deal.with the agrophobia

Pansypots · 26/05/2026 01:40

Another pic and one of my poor knee!

I've pulled the edges together with some strips of plaster for now and recovered it with a dressing and put the bandage back on.

It's on the underside of my right arm which is a pain because I'm right handed and it's such an awkward spot!

Will do an econsult in the morning, thank you. Unfortunately no my GP so far hasn't been very helpful with the agoraphobia; they just keep giving me antidepressants to try, none of which has made much difference so far. It's incredibly frustrating because they're just not taking it seriously enough (and I had a nurse accused me of drug seeking when I said that the only time I've felt normal in the past 12 months was when I was taking diazepam- I really don't want more of it but it's now in my notes that I was seeking it. 😡)

It's looking better already!

Knee is looking worse and I didn't realise I'd also bruised the underside of my upper arm too 🙃🙃
