AIBU to question Liz Jones's reputation as an editor and columnist

How did Liz Jones get such reputable editor roles when she writes absolute rubbish? I believe her columns aren't really true, she's curating an image of herself, but it's not a favourable one.

I think the finance issue is that she's rich but has genuinely convinced herself that she's poor.

Relative innit? The richest person I know had depression and counselling in mid life as he felt a failure as he lived amongst even richer people.

who was the "rock star" again?

She never revealed who it was but hinted that it was Jim Kerr. There were suggestions it was Midge Ure.

But the truth is he never existed. There were too many inconsistencies in her reports about him.

Now, when she runs through the partners she's had in her life, she always forgets to include him.

I had a horrible encounter with her once in a Cornish village. I think I won or rather my DD did.
Very judgemental woman.

Well, I once had a horrible encounter with David Attenborough (I know no one will believe me), who I believe is on the cusp of being deified. One encounter doesn’t reflect a whole person.

I like her, she’s as shallow as a puddle, but she makes me laugh.

She also occasionally highlights animal cruelty practices in this country, which are all around us, but we don’t like to face.

I thought the same until I listened to her podcast.

It turned out that she really does have a strange personality. She's both a narcissist with a massive ego and has extremely low self-esteem at the same time, or at least swings between the two all the time.

Yes a lot of what she writes is not true (ie the rock star) but I think more of it is true (ie the German) than I used to believe.

Did you miss the bit where she admitted that, “The German” was an English bloke called Neil? Then continued calling him the German throughout the whole blow job STD thing until commenters kept pointing out she’d admitted he was an English bloke called Neil and she had to give it up 😂

She was great on celebrity big brother. I like her.

lilaccamille · 25/05/2026 18:22

I kinda liked her column for years but the repeats of poor me are boring now. Her podcast with her BFF Nic put me off her forever.
Time to retire, Liz.

thebear1 · 25/05/2026 18:29

Read her columns years ago but then stopped reading the dm. Liked her love of animals but her stories just seemed off.

Perhaps he was a composite of several boyfriends.

NotTerfNorCis · 25/05/2026 19:08

She's been like this for many years. Always in the middle of some crisis of her own making. Enough people must find it entertaining.

PonyPatter44 · 25/05/2026 19:24

I think she's quite a sad, pitiable little character. She evidently has quite an impressive view of "how my life ought to be", and reality isn't a happy place for her. Poor woman.

It's ironic that she highlights animal cruelty when she's cruel to her own animals.

If you read her column, she has numerous rescue dogs that she refuses to train and who piss all over the place. One of them killed a sheep.

She feeds them human food from M&S or Waitrose (I can't remember which) and when they're clearly at the end of their lives, as one of them currently is, she refuses to do the decent thing and put them to sleep as it would upset her too much, sod the fact that the poor creatures are suffering.

I'm not sure how someone who be on at least a 5-figure salary from the DM can claim to have just £4 in her bank account, as she did a while ago.

She referred to herself as 'catnip to men' 😂. She's delusional and demented.

Backedoffhackedoff · 25/05/2026 19:49

She is. To use technical language. A massive fuck up 🤣 and there is a big dose of paid rage bait in there too.

I read her books in the early / mid 2000s- which were mainly about her ex husband and her brilliant magazine career as editor of Marie Claire. She is no doubt a very experienced editor/ journalist and a compelling writer. From the same era/ group as India knight who was also turned out to be a nutter.

the thing that I will always remember is she has her breasts reduced/ effectively removed- very young, 16,17,18 odd. It was related to her anorexia which I think she’d already been an inpatient for.

just imagine how incredibly unusual that kind of plastic surgery was, for someone so young, in the 80s?! I think that random fact along demonstrates what an unusual person she is

Elsvieta · 25/05/2026 21:01

Well writing and editing are different skills; how she does one doesn't really relate to how she does the other.

I think her main problem is that she's been anorexic for about 50 years. Nobody's brain is really firing on all cylinders when it's perpetually starved. If she learnt to eat she might at least be able to start spending less than she earns (while earning six figures) and understand that men aren't impressed by what your trousers or your haircut cost.

DisrobeDatrobe · 25/05/2026 21:13

Stating the obvious, but we're talking about her here - that's exactly what he Daily Mail would want, other people perhaps seeing this thread and thinking 'I wonder if Liz Jones is as bad as they say, I'll check her column out'.

I think she's 'rage bait' - like the DM's articles about people on benefits apparently living outrageously and extravagantly - and that's what the DM pays her for, whether what she writes is true or not.

Well I love Liz jones, probably seen and done more with her life than most of you put together, you are all obviously reading her column to comment on it, don’t like her don’t read it

Hi Nic 👋

I’m sure I read it was someone from Simple Minds, but I couldn’t say for sure that it was

There was indeed a rumour that it was Jim Kerr but he denied it. It wouldn’t surprise me if she confused her own fantasy with reality.

I think most of what she writes is horseshit. She has spent 30 years monetising neurosis and I don’t think she can tell fact from fiction anymore.
