House being taken over by flies!

MrsRyan2b · 25/05/2026 10:29

Has anyone else got a lot of houseflies over the past couple of days with this hot weather? I’ve spent a fortune on Amazon on electric swatters, sprays and various things but the moment the door is open we get hundreds in. They’re driving me crazy. The only way to stop it is to keep all doors and windows closed and be held hostage by the winged cretins.
is this just my house or does anyone else have this? I feel so disgusting!

Don’t leave ANY food out on display. No fruit bowls or anything like that.

This, empty and wash all bins, buy door fly nets

RudolphTheReindeer · 25/05/2026 10:35

Yes. I've just seen a post on my local FB group about it too. Annoying little fuckers

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 25/05/2026 10:38

I never leave anything out and noticed yesterday there were loads of flies . Yuck

howfascinatingforyou · 25/05/2026 10:41

I think I'm going to buy some nets to put over the windows.

what amazes me is- they seem to make their way in through a teeny tiny half inch crack in the window and yet cannot find their way out again when the window is flung wide. Why???? 😩

Katemax82 · 25/05/2026 10:41

It's not been too bad at my house but in the past has. Its a huge problem because my middle son who is already 21st centile won't eat if there's a fly in the room so he loses weight in summer

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/05/2026 10:43

Do you live near fields of livestock, with all their poo? From experience, that is where you get inundated with the horrible things. Friends in rural Devon used to use old fashioned fly papers, but they’re pretty disgusting, especially if you get your hair stuck to one, as I once did!

HostaCentral · 25/05/2026 10:47

I have friendly spiders. Every morning I hoover up the trussed and dried up husks from the sills and floors. It's actually amazing how successful they are.

So, don't destroy the cobwebs!!

MrsRyan2b · 25/05/2026 10:48

@Katemax82 bless him 😔 I wish I could say the same for me though I’d be a size 8 at this rate! We only really have a fruit bowl but it’s near the back door I guess so I’ll put that away, and I’ll bleach the kitchen floors and sides today! I’ve cleaned the kitchen bin, we have wheelie bins but they’re down the side of the house! We are in a rural village with loads of farms etc around. I’m honestly being driven crazy by them, it’s taking the enjoyment out of the nice weather!

There's your answer I am afraid! I was born and brought up in a village like that. Oh and in a few months round harvest time do you get those teeny tiny black insects? We used to get millions of those.

BTW I remember we had this thing hanging in the door that was just long strips of plastic about an inch wide. I think it was meant to keep flies out to a certain extent without having the door shut all the time.

MrsRyan2b · 25/05/2026 10:58

@5foot5Yes, we call them Thunderbugs!!! Oh my god, from around June onwards the moment you step outside you get covered in them!

I’ll have a look at those, thank you!

We have a fly curtain over our back door which definitely makes a difference. I'd look into getting screens fitted to the windows you open regularly.

MrsRyan2b · 25/05/2026 10:59

@BIossomtoes Thank you, I’ll order one now! Typically we’re getting a new back door and frame fitted mid June so hopefully I’ll be able to transfer it to the new one!

I have those sticky squares that catch them. They were quite good. You can get these table fans off amazon that look quite good for keeping them away from food.

Those are the ones, I have heard them called Thunder flies, although we had a weirdly local name for them. Men of Root.

SaltShark · 25/05/2026 11:18

Ive only had about 4 flys this year.
But i so have mesh in all my windows.

The worst I've ever had it was many years ago living with my ex, im sure it was because of his clutter.
Fly everywhere.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 25/05/2026 11:33

Look at Zero in baited fly catcher. You hang them outside and they catch the flies before they enter. It’s amazing how many they catch. I live rurally and hate the flies with a passion but these are a game changer and not expensive

We moved to the countryside last February ..... and the summer was a baptism of fire - those thinderbug things attacked on mass!

Anyway, yes we have been invaded by flies, I've got the sticky stuff but not put them up yet, I've gone old school with a fly squatter!

dottiedodah · 25/05/2026 11:37

If you live rurally then flies will be prevalent I think. All suggestions are good though so worth trying these for sure

DinoDinoDinoDino · 25/05/2026 11:45

I can’t have any doors or windows open as my
autistic child is terrified of them shes been up all night because of them. Find summer so miserable

TheKittenswithMittens · 25/05/2026 11:46

They seem immune to the zapper.

Tekknonan · 25/05/2026 11:48

Encourage spiders. They are your friends. Mostly, they sit in their webs doing the job of sorting the little buggers out.

hushabybaby · 25/05/2026 11:53

I put a bowl of water with sliced lemons and limes by the back door. They really don’t like the smell.
