To think some people aren’t “misunderstood”, they just never learned basic communication skills?

People romanticise poor communication as complexity.

Certainly at university there were people who scorned small talk, believing that they themselves were deep, complex thinkers and anyone who was able to use small talk, or wanted to chat about something surface level, had no deeper or more complex thoughts at all.

I also came across people who did nothing at all to keep a conversation going, in a situation where not to talk was actually pretty rude (eg at a dinner table where you can only really talk to the people on either side of you) but scorned the other person in the conversation for asking questions/chatting/"blethering on"/ not being as deep and meaningful as they themselves were.
