Anyone else suddenly put off a food after an unpleasant association?

A few years ago my friend had this weird thing where she saw a dead thing (mouse? bird?) in her garden covered in maggots and ever since then she can't bring herself to eat rice or orzo as it reminds her of the maggots. I thought this was a bit weird but a few weeks ago I was eating a curry that I had made and whilst eating a chewy mushroom my brain just screamed "snail!" I spat it out but could not eat any further mushrooms. I've not been able to eat one since. Has anyone else got the ick (can I use that expression here as it is about food and not a man?) with food they usually like? If so, have you managed to get over it and eat that food again?

I had some tuna from a tin of Rio Mare tuna and now I can’t eat tinned tuna at all, even though i had eaten the Rio Mare jars quite happily. I think the olive oil gave it a weird texture in the tin.

I grew up in a dog rough area. I was about 6 and playing out. Went home for dinner and the little boy from next door was having a poo on their doorstep.
Dinner was that cheap horrible tinned ravioli.
Never ever again, even if it's posh!

Nothing wrong with some Escargot!

I used to eat rollmops when I was young. I really liked them (I know a lot here will be disgusted by this!). One day I ate one and presumably it wasnt quite right as I was vomiting heavily shortly after for 30m, then was fine after.

That was a long time ago, and to this day I cant even start to bring one to my mouth without my entire body reacting against the attempt.

Annoyingly I had just started eating a small chocolate mousse desert as this happened, and I couldn't eat that type of mousse ether for a very long time. I could eventually tolerate that type of chocolate mousse, but still don't really like it much.

I had some Bertie Botts every flavour beans in about 2002 or 2003 and there was a carrot one. I threw up violently into my own pencil case in the back of my mums car. I already hated carrots but jelly beans made me boak for years afterwards.

When I was about 15 (1979) we were each asked to bring in a worm from our garden to dissect in biology. I pretended I couldn't find one because I couldn't bear the thought of it being killed. However, others were not deterred. The biology teacher put all the worms in a beaker and poured some liquid in to kill them. They all writhed around frantically. It was horrible and I have never forgotten it. After the lesson I went to the canteen for lunch and wriggly spaghetti was on the menu. The association was too much and to this day, I have never, ever, eaten spaghetti.

Sausage and bean cassoulet 🤢 I was sick after eating it once about 30 years ago and even the thought of it takes me right back to throwing it all up. I had a bug, it was nothing to do with the food but I just can’t bring myself to eat it.
DP retches at the mention of cream of chicken soup! That was the food he was given if he was poorly as a child and just cant make himself eat it

I can’t stand the artificial apple smell for some cleaning products and scents. When pregnant, I had hyperemesis and spent a fair amount of time with my head down the loo. At the time we had an Apple scented loo thing down there and it was all I could smell.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/05/2026 08:26

When I was pregnant 47 years ago we went out to lunch at a pub and I ordered a ham, cheese, onion and pineapple toasted sandwich. I was very sick afterwards (I did have very bad morning sickness). Since then I have been unable to eat ham and cheese together, or pineapple with gammon or hot. The individual items are fine... I can eat cheese and pineapple (cold), I can eat cheese and onion, I can eat ham and onion, but I can't eat them all combined.

x2boys · 18/05/2026 08:32

Apple tango , i drank a bottle when i was about 14 and started being sick with some kind of stomach bug a little later.

Barney16 · 18/05/2026 08:47

As a child I settled down to eat an orange. Peeled it all and then a maggot crawled out of the top. I do very occasionally eat an orange now but I'm highly suspicious of them. Maggoty orange experience was about fifty years ago 🙂

I read a gross thing on quora digest while eating and egg and bacon burrito so now I can't. When I was pregnant with my daughter I made a gross yellow bean chicken dish which put me off Chinese 5 spice for many years

Those honey and lemon Lockett throat lozenges that melt in the middle.
If i just say I didn't realise thet had a laxative effect and I thought I'd let out a fart....you can guess the rest.

😮

I grew up with a sibling with a range of psychiatric conditions that made him somewhat challenging to live with. There's about 5 foods that I still can't eat because they take me right back to my childhood, and memories of him eating them.

Thebibleofdave · 18/05/2026 09:07

Not sure if this counts but I have not been able to eat a prawn after watching the film Sharks Tale. All I hear is 'pleashhhhh don't eat me, my shishter had a baby, its fairly happy, i workshhh in the factory😥

Thebibleofdave · 18/05/2026 09:11

Also I can't drink tea anymore. You know when your engrossed in a good book in bed and you take a sip and realise it's gone tepid? Well I thought it had gone that cold that a skin had formed and literally folded down my chin. Except it was a giant moth.

AggroPotato · 18/05/2026 09:12

Apple juice, accidentally took a drink of some that had gone off, didn't touch it for 20 years.

Choked on a prawn and never touched seafood since.

I have loads!

themesses · 18/05/2026 18:06

I vomited mushroom soup in my sleep as a child, about 7 or 8 years old. It ruined my favourite teddy. I haven’t eaten mushrooms since.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/05/2026 18:10

I once was very ill for 2 days after one too many Bacardi and cokes on holiday when I was19 - I’m now64 and still can’t bear the smell of anything rum related

thisistheworstpossibletiming · 18/05/2026 19:03

It took me a LONG, long time to be able to eat chocolate mousse again after a vicious bout of norovirus!!

CherryRipe1 · 18/05/2026 19:09

I can't eat packs of premade mixed rice with vegetables after I found a curled up millipede in mine.

yummytummy · 18/05/2026 19:22

i can't eat prawns after being violently sick when pregnant with my eldest and had ordered and eaten a prawn chow mein. he is now 18! every time i see a prawn i feel queasy

Shinyhappyapple · 18/05/2026 19:37

Yes. I had an egg mayo sandwich where there was a big lump of rubbery egg
white. Made me gag and haven’t touched eggs since, unless the white is firmly whipped in with the yolk, eg scrambled,
omelette. This was more than 30 years ago and it used to be my favourite sandwich but there’s no way back now.

Oh - you’ve reminded me of when I was that age and was sick after drinking Malibu and pineapple juice - I couldn’t even use my Hawaiian Tropic sun cream! I can use the coconut body cream again now, and I love the taste in a curry, but I won’t drink that drink again. That’s forty years ago.

Dogdaycommeth · 18/05/2026 19:42

Kit kat chunky... I had one from a tuck shop at school and it tasted awful so ive never eaten one since

Aintgointogoa · 18/05/2026 19:50

Argh a runny egg 🤢 I used to happily eat shakshuka (which is delicious) but then the runny yolk started making me queasy....and I cannot go back. I enjoy eggs otherwise (not too often) but even scrambled has to be well cooked. The albumen strands make me feel bokey too. Anything on Masterchef or similar where they are singing the praises for a perfectly runny yolk (eg ravioli) and I just feel nauseous...also for YEARS after primary school and being forced to eat cold lumpy grey mash before I could leave the dining room, meant I couldn't eat mash at all. Now it's one of my favourite things thank goodness (made my way !)
