What happened to MLM's?

What happened to them?

AIBU to miss them? The boss babe quotes, the photos of the white mercs, the CEO of my own life job titles?

Where have they gone, and have they been replaced by anything?

I've got a friend who sells some makeup, can't remember the name of the brand. But she's so awful at SM that I can't imagine she gets many sales.

I'll admit that I signed up to younique back when it was first in the UK. But I never lied about how good it was, never claimed it covered sharpie marker or anything. Refused to lie about my earnings. Basically I was a shit seller and didn't last long. I genuinely loved their foundation though. It was perfect for my skin. The moisturiser left my face looking really good too.

ETA: my friend sells Farmasi

Surely there is no shortage of fools and some other thing must be attracting them instead 🤷🏼‍♀️

They're all trying to become influencers now

clickyteeclick · 07/05/2026 03:11

I too know someone on the travel scheme and when I tell you she is the LAST person I’d book a holiday with 😬. My question is if anyone on here does that travel scheme have you genuinely made any money from it?! Or do you know anyone that has? I can’t see anyone booking with the girl I know for example so am wondering what benefit does she actually get from it?

Flutterbees · 07/05/2026 03:38

I have one on FB who is trying to sell some machine that magically makes your water healthier. I had to hide her content. This is the third product she’s got into, hasn’t made her millions yet.

Netaporter · 07/05/2026 05:24

Yep, travel consultants where I am. The most bizarre one is a woman who used to provide a great service doing something you use at kids parties. Always genuinely busy. Let’s call her the cake lady (it wasn’t cakes but you get the drift) she lives in a very modest house (you used to have to collect from it) but suddenly ‘her dream was to travel’ so she ditched the highly successful thing she did in favour of the ‘travel consultancy’ and now posts ‘content’ from what are very obviously bog-standard package holidays (no judgement but she’s hardly staying at aspirational locations) and content from ‘conferences’ where she’s suddenly giving motivational speeches in an echo chamber. I often wonder what her DH thinks.. they still live in the same house (she posts her first day at school pics on the same doorstep) and she must’ve gone from having a great income from the old business where her posts would have sizeable likes and generate more business to having less than 5 likes on her tedious feed of ‘imagine waking up to this buffet breakfast’ (literally every buffet I’ve ever seen at a hotel) ‘comment BUFFET’ and I’ll send you how you could be enjoying it too’

I once got tapped up to sell Arbonne by a woman who was on the PTA years before me who had used the old contact sheet to call me. She sounded like she genuinely needed my ‘business advice’ and given that we worked in a similar industry and she now lived two counties away I met her for coffee as requested as I thought she might be struggling. She then tried for an hour to recruit me and tried to persuade me to take the kit ‘to see how I got on with it’ (this was after saying that it was ‘irrelevant if the product was any good, it was just about recruiting more people’ ) it was excruciating. I went from being irritated by the obvious lie I’d agreed to meet on to utter incredulousness as to the shite she was spouting. I often wonder what happened to her. I suspect she probably no longer has friends.

If they’ve all fucked off to only fans I’m grateful because at least I’m guaranteed not to be seeing that content.

FriendlyGreenAlien · 07/05/2026 05:54

Ugh, I went to an Arbonne evening with a mum from the school. Thought we were developing a friendship. We went in her white Mercedes. Turns out she’s in it, loaned me samples, it nearly took my face off. Horrible stuff. She dropped me when I wouldn’t buy anything.

Blankscreen · 07/05/2026 06:41

Yes I'd love to know how the 'travel consultancies' make money now.

As someone else said the other popular mlm seems to be trading and signing people up to use a particular trading platform where they earn a commission for each trade and each sign up. They then offer you 'tips'.

My dss got suckered in and lost £13k

I house sat for someone with one of those machines it's called Canogen or Cangen water, they told me it cured his cancer!

Snackpocket · 07/05/2026 07:24

Someone I work with loves an MLM, years back she started on a make-up one and I told her at the time it was MLM but she carried on. Funnily enough never made any real money from it. Now she’s started tropics all of a sudden and started doing Facebook videos about that. When will people learn!

PRPrincess · 07/05/2026 07:33

Travel consultant. Someone I vaguely know is one and posts incessantly on Insta ‘hiiiiii guys, sorry I haven’t been on here…. I am sooooo incredibly blessed to do this life changing work… take a chance, if you’re curious let me know’ etc etc etc

IsAnybodyListening · 07/05/2026 07:41

One of my neighbours who has been a SAHM for many years just invited me to like her new travel consultancy page. Nope.

Tiillytubby · 07/05/2026 07:43

Thank the lord they seem to have mostly died the death here, but yes, it could just be I’ve aged out of being asked…I had one ‘friend’ who went totally bonkers for a few years, posting manic stuff to her 800 followers about how she was going to ‘turn her life around’ in 6 months, and how ‘you’re not tired, you’re uninspired…’ It was a constant stream of ‘I was able to pay for this holiday cause of my side hustle…’ very tone deaf. Her mantra was ‘Happy with what I have, but Unapologetically wanting more…’ She had it as a FB banner. 🙄🙄 These people are real and walk among us…

m1ghtl1ke · 06/05/2026 13:19

I’ve seen the travel agent one, and the utility warehouse. Tropic is still doing the rounds as well (although lots like to claim that’s not an mlm!).

I had a tropic Hun in my fb messages the other day. Old school friend. I was probably a bit less than polite but I did advise her to keep a spreadsheet of all her income and expenditure.

VividDeer · 07/05/2026 08:30

This is on the profile of the one I know locally She wouldn't have a clue who I am, but I know her whole life relationship woes, and pretty much everything about her. This is because she goes to my gym and has a big gob. Let's hope she's not on here 😅

What happened to MLM's?
LondonRidge · 07/05/2026 08:35

The travel ones are a joke. It’s a recruitment job not a travel job and most people know that now, but just leave them to it. To do well you have to work 24-7 not 9-5 so the giving up 9-5 thing is so a joke.

AmazingGreatAunt · 07/05/2026 08:47

What is a travel consultant?
If I want to travel, I either get in my car, catch a bus or train or go online to get flights, hotels etc. I speak several languages and can read enough of a couple of others to get the gist of hotel offerings.
What value-added could a trout-pouting, laminated-brow, false eye-lashed "consultant provide" (and that is only talking about the men)?
I am assuming that the Dubai market has taken a bit of a downturn recently.

This is intended to be very tongue in cheek,

Happyholidays78 · 06/05/2026 15:49

They've gone on to 'coaching', drives me crazy. Get a job! You will genuinely be better off with pension, paid holidays etc

I’ve got someone on SM who’s been a SAHM for 10 years and is now a coach “to help women get back into work”. You couldn’t make it up. Why would I pay you to help me get back into work when you haven’t worked outside the home for a decade? She actually posts old photos of herself post partum, breast feeding etc on linked in!

Crypto. It’s the new MLM and they’re all evangelizing for it. Just like MLM, most of them will lose their shirts.

How does it work? Do they go on line and book you a holiday?
Most people can go on line and book direct with eg. Easy jet or tui etc etc or go in a travel agency 🤔 can't see a market for it myself unless iam missing something

Buried amongst all that nonsense is her MA Ed!! The mind boggles. She could be making a real difference in the world!

DeposedPresident · 07/05/2026 11:00

Thing is- all these people sound the same on their social media. It's a total script they spout. That's what alerted me first to my friend who does the travel one. She started posting like a Tropics 'ambassador' and I thought 'Hmm....... let's look into this.'.

WaneyEdge · 07/05/2026 11:08

coulditbeme2323 · 06/05/2026 13:42

Did anybody ever read the poonique blog?

Yes. Shame that Elle seems to have been permanently blocked on FB. I enjoyed her blog and posts. Now that I think about it, I haven’t seen anyone shilling Younique for years. Had one acquaintance who did but she move to another brand (Farmasi I think). I muted her on socials as it was all bollocks about these amaaaaaazing companies. 🙄

I went somewhere last week and they had Utility Warehouse leaflets on the counters as the owners SIL does this. I think that’s a bit inappropriate, but at least there was no pressure or sales pitch.

I don’t understand this one either. 🤷‍♀️

Crikeyalmighty · 07/05/2026 11:12

With regards to the travel one- of if I can just say they are not all MLMs -there are some decent ones that are simply franchises - I have a friend who does this - she gets great rates, lots of options I’ve never seen before and lots of discount offers and there’s no recruitment element to it or making off other people’s sales.
