Does anyone have an IPL device??

really hoping someone can help!🤞🏻

I’ve got awful body hair from PCOS- particularly on my legs, torso and chest and now spreading up my chest and up my neck. And it’s awful around my bikini area and down there. I’ve tried shaving and waxing and frankly I’m fed up of it because the results are always shit.

ive been wanting to get an IPL for SO long and have finally saved the money buy it. I’m thinking about the Braun prosilk 5 but also looked at the Philips too.

just wondering if anyone has either of these (or another IPL device) and whether it’s worth it and worked?? I’ve read so many good reviews and I’m so excited to try but just so worried it’s a waste of several hundred pounds haha

if anyone has used it and has any feedback I’d be so grateful!! I’ve got pale skin and dark hair so hopefully a good combo for it x

(and before someone criticises me for wanting to be hair free, everyone can have their own choices and it’s my choice to get rid of the hair and frankly I’m fed up of spending my 20s like a woolly mammoth with this amount of body hair!!)

I had one, couldn’t tell any difference to be honest. They have all sorts of disclaimers about hair colour and skin tone- but I just think it was crap.

I’ve got a £30 one from Amazon and it’s fantastic! Made such a difference and I’m naturally blonde so I had low expectations but it’s done the trick and 2 years later it’s still going strong. I’ll find the link if you like? Regardless of which brand you get though, just make sure you shave prior to using an IPL rather than waxing or plucking as shaving leaves the root of the hair in the follicle and the IPL needs that in order to work.

I have the Philips Lumea and it does work but you have to stick with it - I keep
giving up for months and going back to square one but when I do use it consistently, it works really well.

I’ve got the Phillips lumea and followed the schedule exactly and my armpit hair was permanently gone very quickly. Bikini line is hair free where I wanted it hair free too. I haven’t used on legs or arms but it’s been very effective where I’ve used it. Highly recommend.

Have you seen your GP/endocrinologist/gynae for hormonal control? You might find that this helps your PCOS more than IPL.

I had 1 episode of laser in a salon where a friend needed to practice when she started. I have fair, freckly skin and dark brown hair, no PCOS. I was left with maybe 4 under arm hairs and hardly any bikini line hair.

My friend left the company so I only had 1 session. A few years later I bought a braun IPL. This was 10yrs so an older version to what is available now. I used it on/off for 2 years and no saw reduction in underarm or bikini hair. My arms hadn't been excessive, but I did use it on there and other than the finer fuzz, only have a few darker hairs left. I have a few chin/lip hairs now and found absolutely no reduction at all with IPL.

From me experience, I'd recommend some laser sessions at a hair removal place, then topping up at home with the IPL.

Best thing ever, long time owner of Phillips lumea. You need good contrast between skin and hair, works best on paler skin and dark hair. I used to suffer with awful ingrown hair and a bit of bristle elsewhere. Highly recommended 👌

I got the Philips Lumea and it’s honestly been life changing. I also have pale skin and dark hair and my hair was really thick and coarse. I went from having to shave my legs and pluck my chin hairs every other day to now once every couple of weeks. Less if I do some top up sessions.
It was pricey but worth every penny for me. Although I’m currently pregnant and the hair growth is ramping up again and unfortunately I can’t use it!

Phillips lumea here too, and it’s been a game changer. It works best on dark hair on fair skin, and if you stick with it and follow the programme for a couple of years I’ve found it’s almost permanent.

Daschy16 · 02/05/2026 20:49

I have a Phillips Lumea and have always suffered with excess dark hair - especially on my chin and upper lip. It works, but you have to keep on top of it. I also found that my chin area was stubborn, so I ended up treating it every other day for a period. Over a year later, I just need occasional top ups and the hair growth is significantly reduced.
I belive it works best with paler skin and darker hairs.

I know a PP recommended laser treatment, but having had 8 sessions that years ago - it all grew back very quickly and was pricey (albeit I believe prices have significantly come down since 2015) . I got better results at home with the IPL machine.

CatMum27 · 02/05/2026 20:49

I recently took the plunge with a Lumea and it’s a game changer. I have pale skin and dark hair and was fed up of shaving the beard every day. I’ve just finished the initial course and hairs are 90% gone. My chin is smooth for the first time in years and I’m not having to shave at all.

I got mine on offer but it was still the painful side of pricey. It’s made a real difference in my confidence level though so worth it for me. About to start zapping the rest of me!

FangFan · 02/05/2026 20:57

I’ve got the Lumea, been using it every other week since the end of December and now I’m on monthly top ups. Hair has significantly reduced everywhere I’ve used it, legs and bikini need more work (I’ve got a lot of light downy hair on my legs and it hasn’t touched that) but armpits are pretty much completely hair free now and my peri-moustache has almost completely gone too. I’m brunette with fairly light skin.

norristhedog · 02/05/2026 21:00

I have a lumea I have Pcos and fair skin / dark hair. It’s amazing !!!

ImaginationLand · 02/05/2026 22:14

I’ve got the Lumea too and it’s been brilliant. It’s worked so well I hardly need to use it anymore. I have pale skin and dark hair. Wish I had it 20 years ago! I very rarely need to shave at all.
