Help me with my addiction-it’s been three times this week

I’ve recently developed an obsession for sushi and each time I go shopping or to do an errand in the morning (I work later in the day) I buy my favourite iced coffee and a little pack of sushi and eat it in my car with my iced coffee whilst I drive home.
I know it doesn’t sound like a bad addiction, but I cannot afford to keep doing this!

Anyone else keep giving themselves ‘Little treats’ but it’s adding up? (Not necessarily foody things, that just seems to be my Achilles heel

Starbucks!!

Luckydog7 · 30/04/2026 21:32

It sounds like its the ritual/quiet time rather then the food itself? Could you replace the sushi with something cheaper? Also the coffee is likely as expensive as the sushi so both need to go.

Can you make a big iced coffee at home? I use decent instant dissolved into hotwater with a little cocoa and sugar, milk, a slug of double cream then topped up with homemade ice. makes a lush iced coffee for a fraction of the cost of buying. Use a reusable straw to make it feel more like a bought one.

Trying to think of a sushi replacement. Sushi is both sweet and salty so perhaps that sweet and salt popcorn instead?

Then with your coffee and snack in hand, have your quiet time doing a favourite thing to make a new 'treat time' in the garden in the sunshine. short walk somewhere green to find a bench. Scroll on the phone on the sofa? Make a new ritual.

TyneTeas · 30/04/2026 21:34

I find this quite helpful for scaring showing myself how the cost adds up and thinking about what else I could do with that money

If you are anywhere near an Asda they do brilliant little sushi rice bowls for about a quid. They use all the trim and leftovers from when they make their sushi and mix it up and put it in a salad bowl, like a poke bowl. It's lovely, you get that same sushi taste hit, but it's cheap as chips.

poutlikeyoumeanit · 30/04/2026 21:50

I make my own sushi bowls as I am also addicted

This is the really easy - not at all authentic ones.

I can also make sushi but only when im really arsed.

Sushi rice - normal will do at a pinch
I cook mine in a rice cooker with a bit of Chinese vinegar and a teaspoon of sugar and some salt

  • you could do this with the normal way of cooking rice obviously but I dont know how to cook rice.

Let it cool - or dont ita fine hot but not as sushi like

Cut up finely

  • cucumber
-avocado -red pepper

(Add other veg - i sometimes do grated carrots)

Mix with the rice

Add any-
Smoked salmon
Smoked haddock etc
Tinned tuna
Finely chopped chicken
Crab meat
Prawns

Put in a bowl

Top with sesame seeds and cod roe (lidl does this regularly)

Add in slices of nori sheets if you wish

Serve with decent soy sauce and picked ginger

Omg I've made myself want sushi again

We have this at least once a week for tea

DollydaydreamTheThird · 30/04/2026 22:07

I'm addicted to the yo sushi chicken katsu sushi rolls. The mayo is to die for. Luckily lidl do it too but its not spot on. Agree, very expensive habit! I'm a poor adult student as well so not ideal. I should be on packed lunches to save money.

Sable grapes 😩

Too good to go do a Yo Sushi bag if there’s one near you. It’s £6 a bag. I usually treat myself every couple of weeks.

Sounds lovely but it’d be cheaper to buy shop ones surely?!

The OP isn’t buying proper sushi. She is buying the nasty packaged “sushi” from supermarkets which isn’t sushi, and it’s also fully cooked.

It’s proper sushi. A counter at the supermarket where they produce sushi. It’s freshly made, you can request what you like or have the ones in the fridge made up by them

Obviously buying the ingredients in the first place is expensive eg rice, vinegar, soy sauce, roe - but it all lasts for a good number of times

But then the rest of it is pretty cheap for a mixing bowl full of sushi mix. Mainly depends on type of fish.

Definitely not as expensive as prepared sushi. I couldn't fill my family for dinner for less than about £50 of premade sushi and if im going to spend that much I'll add a bit extra and go to a proper restaurant with an actual sushi chef

Watch out @Starvingasusual the sushi police have arrived. 🤣🤣🤣

EastEndQueen · 30/04/2026 22:43

Sushi addict here also. I find the YoSushi salmon Poke bowls that come in the Tesco premium meal deal for £5 (with clubcard) hit the spot pretty well

Grabity · 30/04/2026 22:44

If you’re struggling with will power, apply it earlier than you need it. eg Eat a high protein breakfast at home in the morning and bring a travel cup of coffee with you on your errands.

Don’t ever rely on having will power in the face of temptation. Try and alter the conditions in which you encounter it.

Same principle as not buying biscuits so you only need to be strong for a few minutes in the shop, not trying to resist the biscuit tin 24/7.

Sunshine1500 · 30/04/2026 23:26

you can get sushi and costa coffee in supermarket meal deal . Might not taste good, I’ve never tried it but it looks nice.

Sushi fish is flash frozen to kill parasites.

Where do you buy the row?

Lidl usually have it

hattie43 · Yesterday 01:39

Oh this is me. I have to get the Waitrose salmon nigiri every time i go in , even if it’s just for a paper .

SerendipityCat · Yesterday 01:57

Well, there’s no hope for me, the Sushi Police might as well take me away now. My crime is that I buy the cheap Aldi sushi regularly, and I like it. There, I feel better for confessing. And if it wasn’t nearly 2am I’d probably be raiding the fridge right now and finishing off yesterday’s purchase.
I may even eat it for breakfast.

Why not buy a small insulated coffee mug with lid, and a insulated small lunch box...batch prep some sushi rolls and ice coffee (YouTube is bound to have lots of recipes, they may even have Starbucks inspired recipes) and then take it with you....then you still get your sushi and ice coffee treat, but it will probably be cheaper because you can buy the ingredients yourself
