AIBU to ask if ashwagandha is safe beyond three months?

Posting here for traffic.

I have been taking ashwagandha for the last few weeks and have certainly noticed an improvement in my mood, reduced anxiety, feel more balanced somehow; however I read you can only take for 3 months as it could affect liver.

Is this correct?

What’s that?

BertieBotts · 27/04/2026 08:53

vv quick google suggests the 3 month thing is because effects of long term use is unknown. It suggests speaking to your GP so I would probably do that before the 3 month deadline and see what they suggest.

Alternatively you could consult a herbalist.

Thank you. It is a shame as it has been great for menopausal anxiety. I just feel calmer.

@Pinkladies99 I take it and love it. I've taken it daily for the last 2 years. In that time, i've come off it for 1-2 weeks twice. I do not have any side effects.

It really is a game changer for some people. I would be wary of scare mongering. Have your GP check your liver a few times a year if you choose to stay on it at the suggested dose for longer than 3 months.

This is my industry, it’s perfectly fine to take continuously.

Catza · 27/04/2026 10:11

There was a study which came out earlier this year with intake over 12 months showing no adverse effects.

Can anyone recommend a brand? How do you take it? This sounds like something I need!

Chocolatecoffeecup · 27/04/2026 10:13

I started taking it about a month ago and then stopped due to reading this online. I'm not sure Mumsnet can give you the answer you're looking for OP but I wouldn't take the risk and so plan to "cycle" it eg 2 months on, one off but I'm not even sure that's sufficient.

I've got nutrition geeks. It's tablets.

lion mane root is good for mood as well

I find that if I take it too long I start to lose my enthusiasm for things, especially exercise as I don't get the same dopamine hit. So I don't take it as a regular daily supplement. However due to factors outside my control, I work out late in the evening a couple of times a week and sometimes am so buzzing from that it interferes with my sleep, and ashwagandha calms me right down.

NippyNinjaCrab · 27/04/2026 10:24

I had a look at this but I am also on Sertraline, Quetiapine and Amitriptyline and it said there was a risk of serotonin syndrome. Anyone have info on this? Or if it is safe to take. X

Interesting. Thought I found the solution to my problems; but I guess everyone reacts differently
