Can AI tell animal bones from human?

So on a dog walk today I found a pelvis, well part of a pelvis. AI told me it was from a large mammal such as a pig. So I left it where I found it (not near any pig fields by the way) but now I'm home I'm wondering if I should maybe have done something in case it wasn't animal but human. Do we think AI can be trusted on this?

Can you Google pig pelvis and human pelvis? Are they similar?

ColdAsAWitches · 25/04/2026 13:07

If you're out in the country it is far more likely to be animal than human.

SilenceInside · 25/04/2026 13:07

Don't take anything an AI tells you at face value, check the references it quotes to see if they are actually relevant and say what the AI has summarised for you. You still have to use your own human judgement.

Logic says no

And Google says no

Of all the things I never thought I'd have to ask Google!

@Halfblindbunny I know it can be a bit weird when you find bones in the countryside. But it's fine. It's not likely to be human.

To be honest, when you find a part of a skeleton, it's always hard to tell but how big a part did you find?

Halfblindbunny · 25/04/2026 14:49

Having googled pig and human pelvises (pelvisi?) I think it is more likely animal. I will upload a photo, it was pretty big.

@InterestedDad37 blimey
Where's the rest of the elephant? 😂

@Halfblindbunny that doesn't look like a human pelvis to me, but I'm not an expert

Excellent 😂 mystery solved then. Clearly some poor elephant has wandered off into the British countryside and died.

Halfblindbunny · 25/04/2026 15:08

Ah yes elephant that makes far more sense 😀

No, AI is not in any way accurate (as evidenced above!), and also no, that definitely isn’t human.

That’s not a human pelvis 100%

Probably not an elephant though! A cow/goat/pony would make more sense

AI would only be able to distinguish pictures of human vs animal bones once it has been trained with enough pictures of human and animal bones

A general AI app would be able to establish that the uploaded image is a photo, a photo of an object, that probably looks like other bone photos, maybe even that it looks like a particular type of bone …. Etc

To be better an AI tool needs to be trained with enough data (pictures plus categories for those pictures) then tested (it guesses what the picture is, and the human operators confirm or correct) and repeat

toomuchfaff · 25/04/2026 17:29

You have the picture, and the location. You can always ring it into 111 and report it for peace of mind and let someone else make the decision.
