What do you think of ‘Instagram chic’?

CaragianettE · 23/04/2026 21:39

I feel like there is very much a set look for women at the moment that crops up again and again on instagram. Some variations, but it is likely to be: a cashmere sweater or buttoned up cardigan in a block colour like navy, a white t shirt, blue straight leg jeans or a silk skirt, stylish white trainers. It feels like such a uniform somehow. What do you think of this look? Is it actually chic, or just in fashion at the moment? Or is it already going out of fashion? Or is it here for a while? Do you consider it aspirational to dress like this?

YABU - this look is boring/sheep like/will look hideous and dated in five years/already looks hideous and dated, the actual current fashion is something else

YANBU - this look is chic and here to stay for a while

(I don’t actually have much of an opinion, am curious about others’, but I’ve divided into YABU/YANBU so that people can vote if they want to)

I haven’t seen this on Instagram but what you describe is a classic look of natural fabrics and neutral colours. It won’t go out of fashion because it’s not really in fashion. I’ve been wearing versions of this since the late 90s.

VanQueefApples · Yesterday 02:44

That is a classic look but don’t forget, everyone’s Instagram algorithm is different. Yours is showing you lots of people in that sort of outfit. Other people’s accounts may not show them that sort of content.

steff13 · Yesterday 04:13

My Instagram algorithm is very different from yours, apparently.

The outfit sounds fine. It may be a nod to Caroline Bissett Kennedy - that series just came out about her and JFK, Jr., and the sounds like her style.

CapaciousHag · Yesterday 05:12

I thought ‘Influencer Style’ was all beige cashmere? 😄

I do find that look, and the variation you describe, terribly boring. But I’ve assumed it’s popular because it’s so very safe and easy to replicate.

It actually doesn’t come up on instagram for me - the algorithm has long since given up trying to turn me into an acolyte of the bland.

Oleoreoleo · Yesterday 05:22

I’ve been dressing like that for years and I’ve never been on instagram. I’m boring, not much interested in clothes and need something practical that doesn’t draw unwanted attention.

CapaciousHag · Yesterday 05:25

From who, @Oleoreoleo?

Downunderduchess · Yesterday 05:31

Style is personal. Following a set of rules with what to wear is not for me. A lot of the instagram looks are boring copies of the same thing and mainly only look good on very slim women. I much prefer seeing individual style, not eccentric or quirky necessarily just a look that is interesting and suits the wearer.

lovealieinortwo · Yesterday 05:47

It is classic but instagram is full of influencers all dressing the same so pretty boring.

SardinesOnButteredToast · Yesterday 07:12

My algorithm sends me no one outside a gym, more or less

Barrenfieldoffucks · Yesterday 07:13

Isn't that just a rather standard look? Sounds pretty 'timeless' to me.

bunnyvsmonkey · Yesterday 07:15

I don't have Instagram. If I saw this out in the wild I would marvel at the white shirt presumably not stained and ironed. How??

WhatAboutSecondBreakfast86 · Yesterday 07:17

Sounds pretty standard but I haven't worn trainers since the 00s! I Still live in my Doc Martens and distressed jeans although now at 40 I feel I need to opt for more 'sensible' jeans without any rips in them!

Backawayfromthesausage · Yesterday 07:23

I think that’s your algorithm, you must have looked at someone like that, and now it feeds you. It’s not a fashionable style, more just a classic one.

SarahAndQuack · Yesterday 08:35

It's your algorithm.

(How do people not know this in 2026?)

Yes, mine shows me endless knitwear and scarves, because of what I’ve clicked on in the past.

WildGarden · Yesterday 09:01

Instagram sends me images of women in dungarees and boots working in gardens or tending hens.

NoSoupForU · Yesterday 09:32

I've never heard of Instagram chic but it sounds fucking dull.

Can nobody just decide for themselves what they like anymore?? I'm sick to shitting god of seeing everyone looking so identical whether it's the fillers, makeup, boring boring clothes, car, identikit fucking Stanley cups and panda dunks.

BauhausOfEliott · Yesterday 09:59

This isn't a look I particularly associate with Instagram, I think it's just a fairly standard preppy-casual, dull, quiet-luxury look that's been around for decades. It's not really my thing but I don't think it will date.

CaragianettE · Yesterday 10:00

Thanks for the replies. No, it’s not a timeless look. There was a time when everything was skinny jeans and ballet flats.

Yes some of it may be my algorithm, but I noticed skinny jeans and ballet flats in the days before Instagram because they were in all the magazines and everyone was wearing them on the street. And I notice the current aesthetic on the street too, it’s not only Instagram/my algorithm.

My algorithm is showing different things to you.

I’m getting a lot of Carolyn Bessett Kennedy inspired people (even though I’m old enough to remember her in real time ) and people claiming that the most stylish people don’t follow trends and wear what they like and look good in because fashion trends are a con to make people consume stuff for the sake of it.

Starlightexpresss · Yesterday 10:07

Not sure I've seen this exactly but fashion on instagram is weird AF.

Someone I know through friends is some kind of insta influencer and her photos utterly baffle me. She's there in this hideous beige cloth baggy sack tunic thing that has no shape whatsoever (could easily be a maternity dress) and looks like its the off cut of a tailor's waste pile and everyone is all "omg thats fabulous, you look amazing!!!". Another one - these beige baggy trousers (and I mean baggy, as in MC Hammer in the 90s baggy) which ended right above her ankles so they were neither proper trousers nor capri pants and the ends were all frayed as if they hadn't even been stitched properly - more comments such as "stunning- so stylish!" and "so beautiful". WTAF

I feel like the kid in the emperors new clothes 🤣

Yeah I know what you mean! The ‘knotted beige sweater over beige coat’ thing is so hideous to me.

It’s probably AI chic anyway.
