Is it me or have these standards hugely declined?

I am interested in whether anyone else has found first class flight standards have really declined. I’m talking over the past couple of years.

We’ve only had a couple of long hauls since early December and found the quality of food offering to be sub-standard compared to usual, and a real mixed bag in terms of service.

Even the quality of gifts has deteriorated - luxury brands replaced with brands you can find on your average high street.

Real food for thought if such a decline is terminal.

Only A COUPLE of LONG hauls since DECEMBER??? What are you doing to the environment???

Buscobel · 09/04/2026 17:24

First world problem!

TheChosenTwo · 09/04/2026 17:24

The last time I took a first class flight was about 10 years ago 😂
so I can’t really advise. I get there in the same time whether I fly on the top deck, in front of the curtain or behind so I save my money now.

ScrambledEggs12 · 09/04/2026 17:24

Can't you just buy your own gifts?

LlynTegid · 09/04/2026 17:25

Airline standards for things like legroom, services included in the basic price, and food have declined.

Because people have chosen the airlines with low advertised fares in large numbers.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/04/2026 17:26

I often think ‘sod it, let’s go first class’. Then I look at the price and get back in my box. Never flown first class, probably never will. That’s not because I’m skint, I’m not. But it’s still wayyyy out of my league.

JustForGoss · 09/04/2026 17:27

Oh no, the quality of the gifts have declined on first class flights? How terrible. Probably not worth it, take the cheap seats and try to sleep with your knees in your face next time.

LittleMissClutter · 09/04/2026 17:27

🤣🤣

youalright · 09/04/2026 17:28

I've never been first class before but at the prices they charge i would expect it to be perfect so yanbu

ReneePaloma · 09/04/2026 17:31

They have declined, but this is just late stage capitalism. Businesses cut corners where they can get away with it in order to increase shareholder profit. It certainly isn’t unique to airlines.

DuckyDolittle · 09/04/2026 17:31

Kim, there's people that are dying

Whosthetabbynow · 09/04/2026 17:33

Stop it

Madarch · 09/04/2026 17:35

😂
Ha! Good one!

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/04/2026 17:40

Well they have definitely declined since the days of BOAC (precursor to BA) which is when I last travelled 1st class. Back then then the upper deck of the Jumbo Jet was a bar and lounge area for 1st class. It was full of sofas and coffee tables witb bowels of crisps and peanuts. Crying babies (looking at you DB!) were taken away to be cuddled in the cockpit.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/04/2026 17:43

Only a couple of long hauls since December?!

I feel like I’m living in a different world. What gifts do you usually get on a first class flight?

ComradeAmoeba · 09/04/2026 17:43

100% agree OP. We flew to Singapore last month. Booked a suite with Singapore Airlines as per usual.

We are normally given hand-embroidered silk pyjamas to change into. Now the pyjamas are sweaty, scratchy viscose from Primark. Ugh. I ended up with thrush.

Yellowpapersun · 09/04/2026 17:44

I too have been disappointed by 1st class air travel, so I've done the only sensible thing and bought myself a private jet. My DH liked it so much he bought his own, so we have plenty of legroom. Plus we don't have to breathe the same recycled air as the great unwashed downstairs.

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 09/04/2026 17:48

🤣🤣🤣

My heart bleeds for you

myheadsjustmush · 09/04/2026 17:49

Oh dear - this must be soooo upsetting for you.

Please do stay positive whilst enduring this absolutely awful situation. Try and stay focussed on the fact that you do not have to sit with the great unwashed in the bowels of Economy Class.......... 🤣🤦‍♀️

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 09/04/2026 17:49

"Real food for thought" 🤣🤣🤣

"Real food for thought" 🤣🤣🤣

Yes, clearly beyond this lies the Abyss…

SnowyPetals · 09/04/2026 17:54

Yeah, it's shocking. The only thing to do is buy yourself a nice yacht, all done out to your taste, and have your PA put gifts on board before you get there. This is also great because the standards at 5 star hotels have also slipped, so it saves the trauma of having a slightly wrinkled bed sheet and substandard pillow chocolate as has become the norm these days.

Pollyanna87 · 09/04/2026 17:56

The gap between the super-rich and the rest of us is widening so dramatically that anyone who flies on a commercial liner can longer expect VIP service. If this isn’t a wind-up, you’re no longer rich enough for the lifestyle you desire, apparently.

ConstitutionHill · 09/04/2026 17:58

Some real green-eyed vipers on this one Grin🐍

LondonPapa · 09/04/2026 17:59

@Jessicastyle is this BA? I’d agree if so. But disagree if Swiss, Singapore or Cathay. Air France offer a great product too. BA is shit in comparison.
