To think that vets are the solution to the crisis?

So the junior doctors are unhappy with payment. The government could replace with vets?

Advantages:
Highly intelligent, over qualified, they have learned multiple species so focusing on one is a doddle for them
They often work for less £ than doctors
They have experience of the species, being that they are one
Pension is much cheaper
Human hospitals better condition than the farmyard

Tbf I’d rather be treated by my vet than some of the doctors I’ve dealt with

randomchap · 07/04/2026 21:39

And if the patient is too unwell they can just put them down

Timespentwithcatsisneverwasted · 07/04/2026 21:39

Please this must be a joke. As much as I'd prefer to be treated by my cat's vet than some doctors, I wouldn't expect vets to do this 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂. Why on earth would a vet want to cover for doctors?!?! It's completely different!!!! 😂

BlessedCheesemaker · 07/04/2026 21:42

Thank God, finally a sensible answer....

DarmokAndJaladAtTenagra · 07/04/2026 21:43

Large animal vets are used to making housecalls

Pay? They could be offered the same as the consultants, they jump at the chance I'd think and it's an easier job - just one species?

Vets prefer animals to people otherwise they would be doctors as most have to fight even harder to get places at university and leave earning a pittance comparatively. .

ACynicalDad · 07/04/2026 21:44

Don't get James Herriot on the maternity ward.

Flakeypastry · 07/04/2026 21:45

Vet’s are really undervalued, their salary is much lower than a Dr’s.

Exactly! The vets are paid less but over qualified! So a deal could be struck to get them in. They are geniuses!

Not a bad idea because when I see my doctor I go crazy and try to scratch and bite him. At least a vet would be used to that.

BillieWiper · 07/04/2026 21:47

You want surgery on your heart, brain, bones, nerves, reproductive organs to be carried out by people who only have experience working on dogs and cats?! They're completely different species!

Why not ask a mechanic to perform surgery. They know how to fix things?!

Absolutely ridiculous idea.

RedWineCupcakes · 07/04/2026 21:48

Had I wanted to look after people, I would not have studied veterinary medicine. Humans and animals do not have the same diseases.
Utterly bonkers.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 07/04/2026 21:50

Vets (obviously) chose their profession.

They would not have chosen to become vets if they had wanted to treat humans!

cantgardenintherain · 07/04/2026 21:50

What idiocy. Vets do not have the same skills. Of course, people starting threads such as this don’t understand that. They just have a lot of opinions.

XenoBitch · 07/04/2026 21:51

No, because vets need to stay being vets because they are very much needed. And if they had wanted to go into human medicine, they would have.
I don't think the vet industry is full of people who failed to get into med school.

MaurnaP · 07/04/2026 21:53

Vets are very highly capable though. I think it wouldn't take much for them to learn the human species, they know so many others. Plus there's AI for support.

Similarly, I would not want a heart surgeon operating on my brain. Even human doctors specialise.

If they could have, or wanted to, they would have already.

We don't have a shortage of doctors anyway.

scrivette · 07/04/2026 21:54

I don’t think they should be allowed to deliver babies though - I have seen them tie a rope around a calves legs to pull it out of the birth canal - not sure that would have worked for my footling breech baby.

LauraJaneGrace · 07/04/2026 21:56

And they can give the patients treats if they sit properly.

Yeah, exactly! How on earth could someone think a vet could be a doctor?!

I definitely have far more faith in my vets than I do my GP!
