Do you wash chicken?

I have a friend who was horrified when a foreign visitor washed chicken and spread chicken juice everywhere. I don't wash chicken but back in the 80s I did as that seemed to be the thing to do. Do you wash your chicken?

No!

WaffleParty · 07/04/2026 19:37

No. Why would you? Do you wash any other meat?

Ineffable23 · 07/04/2026 19:37

No.

sanityisamyth · 07/04/2026 19:37

No. It splashes raw chicken everywhere. It shouldn’t be washed.

giddyboo · 07/04/2026 19:37

No.

hazelberry · 07/04/2026 19:37

No.

XenoBitch · 07/04/2026 19:38

No. What is the point?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/04/2026 19:38

Nope.

RedWineCupcakes · 07/04/2026 19:38

Hell, no!

BikeShmike · 07/04/2026 19:39

I tried to do it once but she shat all over the shower and escaped out the window!

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 07/04/2026 19:39

No! I’m sure there used to be an advert advertising against doing it due to water splashing and potentially spreading bacteria.
I don’t wash any meat I’m cooking with chicken is no different

I’m fairly certain that by washing chicken you just risk salmonella getting everywhere.
Either way, no I don’t wash chicken.

Tom Hanks Hello GIF

Yeah, it's a cultural thing for us.

My cousin is a chef and says that it isn't hygienic in a professional kitchen. He doesn't do it at work. At home? He washes his meat like we've always done growing up.

We speculated that whatever germs it spreads, we obviously become immune to them. But I bet if people who don't wash their chicken started doing it at home, they would.

I so didnt mean to include the Gif but it's fitting!

Bikenutz · 07/04/2026 19:41

No, it spreads bacteria. There was a tv campaign about it in the 80s. It is one of the few situations where not washing something is MORE hygienic.

rememberingthem · 07/04/2026 19:42

Washing goes against all food hygiene standards and it actually increases the risk of food poisoning etc.

TheStepboardisfullofbitteroddos · 07/04/2026 19:43

Not in the UK. I have when abroad and bought meat from a market. I can understand why some cultures do it if they're used to buying meat from places that might be so clean.

🤯

TheChosenTwo · 07/04/2026 19:45

Of course not, it’s being cooked!
washing it risks spreading raw chicken germs (listeria springs to mind but I might be totally wrong, I don’t know what listeria is🫣) in places you might not spot.

Ninerainbows · 07/04/2026 19:46

No. What are we meant to be washing off?

Griselinia · 07/04/2026 19:49

Nope. No rinsing of meat. Not unless it was freshly slaughtered and I needed to rinse some hair off or something.

Lunaballoon · 07/04/2026 19:49

I let the cooking take care of any bacteria. Rinsing meat under a tap will do nothing other than potentially contaminating the “splash zone”.

WHAT? That's madness.

I don't wash chicken or any meat.
