Help me find a fountain pen

Telephonelightflashing · 03/04/2026 10:36

Right, I'm clueless.
I need to buy a fountain pen as a present. It's to replace a broken one.
The much loved pen has no brand but is heavy, and very chunky. The pens I've seen have been mostly plastic. This one is metal. I have no idea where to start! Any help would be much appreciated!

I have a Wordsworth and Black fountain pen, that was a gift, and it’s lovely. Not too expensive but is metal, a nice weight and writes well. It came in a box with an ink converter, so can be used with cartridges or bottles of ink. Lots of colours available too

Depending how much you want to spend you can try these two sites. Both do bespoke fountain pens and metal ones:
Clyde Pen company or
the pen shop

Look on the cult pens website. My personal favourite brand at the moment is Kaweco. They write beautifully and have metal options. I have them in plastic and metal and they're all v high quality. Can't recommend them enough.

Ifitaintgotnoswing · 03/04/2026 11:30

Whats the budget?

Ifitaintgotnoswing · 03/04/2026 11:37

toms studio have some lovely pens but cost between £65-95
some all metal parkers are sub £30

KidsLifePathQuestion · 03/04/2026 12:03

I just came here to find my fellow pen heads 😂 Cult pens are great for comparing brands and options, I love Kaweco and there's a raw aluminium one for around £50, but I do have trouble with screwing/unscrewing the parts. If they might also like the plastic of the traditional 60s pen then I've also found the Platinum brand to be very retro feel, write beautifully (its my everyday pen) and also cheap as chips!

ToadRage · 03/04/2026 12:21

My parents bought fancy Waterman pen for my husband as a graduation present. It was from the counter in John Lewis. I have a Parker.

CurlewKate · 03/04/2026 12:23

Tom’s Studio! Lovely, beautifully made and no leaks.

thistimelastweek · 03/04/2026 12:27

Another vote for Tom's Studio.
Beautiful little pens.

longtompot · 04/04/2026 00:16

I bought my dds some pens from Toms Studio and they are gorgeous! They love that you can replace the nibs and they are refillable.

Starbells53 · 04/04/2026 00:22

I'm another Tom's Studio fan.

BeaLola · 04/04/2026 00:25

Toms Studio all the way

ExOptimist · 04/04/2026 00:27

Another fan of Cult Pens here, they have a huge choice. Last year bought a brown crocodile resin effect Faber Castell with an extra fine nib which is great, using sepia ink at the moment and love the effect.

Try a website called pure pens. They are local to us and we have used them several times for fountain pens. I am sure if you phoned and explained what you wanted they would make suggestions.

bridgetreilly · 04/04/2026 00:54

I wouldn’t describe a Kaweco Sport as chunky!

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 04/04/2026 00:58

Scriveiner pens are fab. I bought their fountain pen and have since bought a ballpoint and rollerball same colour to match. Very reasonably priced.

Piggles1979 · 04/04/2026 07:48

The Kaweco brass (pictured up thread) is heavy, chunky and writes really well.
I also have a Kaweco sport plastic pen, which is also a delight.

SisterTeatime · 04/04/2026 07:51

I’ve got a couple of plastic Kaweco Sport pens and plan to upgrade to metal. I love the design and they are the perfect chunkiness for my slightly arthritic fingers. I can’t grip thin pens very well.

leshirondelles · 04/04/2026 07:59

Another fan of Cult Pens. I like the Kaweco pens, I have a Sport and a Lilliput. Benu are very nice, smooth writers and well made. And Lamy do some very nice pens.

Elektra1 · 04/04/2026 08:06

I’ve got one from Tom’s Studio which is beautiful and writes very well

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/04/2026 08:53

DM still uses a Sheaffer fountain pen she got for her 21st birthday, over 60 years ago. I also go a Sheaffer fountain pen for my 18th and the matching roller ball for my 21st - they are over 30 years old now!

Wordsmithery · 04/04/2026 09:20

I buy Lamy pens. (They are plastic though.)

They write well. They are cheap enough that if you lost one you wouldn't be heartbroken. The range of ink colours is fab. I have several pens with different colour inks to suit my mood. 🙂

I love this pen from Amazon pen
The reviews were great so I gave it a try. It's heavy and writes really nicely. It also has a refillable cartridge which I love. It's so much better than the price tag suggests.

Do you have a photo of the original pen?
