AuADHD child & none stimulant meds

Hi all, This is not an AIBU, but I posted here for traffic, as I am feeling quite deflated. I am looking for advice, experiences.

CYPS are thinking about starting dc on a none-steroid medication because of steroids not working out. Dc is 9 and high functioning AuADHD. We have had a terrible time of it for weeks, especially at school to say the least. I am dreading pick up everyday to be honest, as I never know what is going to happen. Everybody I have talked to at the school gates has had such success on steroids, it is quite disheartening for us.

Has anybody had any experience with this kind of medication? I understand it builds up in the system, have you seen a successful difference and when?

Thank you for reading.

Steroids? Steroids are not a treatment for ADHD. Are you talking about stimulants?

AnEnigmaAndHope · 26/03/2026 13:39

Sorry, I meant to say stimulants!

OK, I don't have experience with the non-stimulant medications but I do know that the stimulants are not brilliant for a lot of people. I really didn't like methylphenidate so have moved to dextroamphetamine, but I have to be really careful how I take it. If I take it after 10am, I won't sleep all night. If I don't eat lunch, I'll feel really ill later on. And so on.

Thank you for getting back to me. He has had such a bad time, we stopped medication altogether afew weeks ago. We have tried multiple doses, brands, and release methods. They took away his personality and spark, and appetite no matter now we timed it. The med also increased his fight or flight, and made his emotional regulation worse, it was like pouring petrol onto a fire. The small increase in focus was not worth the price.

I am hoping to try none stimulant to see, as his nervous system is really sensitive. It is really disheartening when everybody i have spoken to has had such great results, and my little boy has been through such a rough time. I feel sick with worry, and just wish I could take it away.

I am sorry you are also having a rough time yourself.
