I don't know whether the 'shift in the Overton window' is impacting me or what, but my cleaner came to me saying she is paying too much tax and she's making no money. She then asked me to start paying her in cash. I said I would think about it. She then said she had a conversation with her husband and they wanted to be clear on who as paying the tax, her or me. This left me perplexed because she knew it was her responsibility which is why she complained in the first place. She has now come back to me and said I need to pay her £25 more to cover the tax she needs to pay. I pay her £140 for 6 to 7hours cleaning. I'm more than a bit miffed given I pay my own taxes. I don't think I should pay hers. Now, this is the overton window part - I know she also lives in a council house in zone 2 of London and receives some benefits. Also, she was not born here. It is this last part that made me feel like a horrible person, given I am from a family that moved to this country in the 1950s. However, honestly, this makes me feel totally taken advantage of. Give it to me, I can take it! I think there is something very wrong in her approach, but also something very ugly and regrettable in mine.
