Croup Steroids Side Effects in 14 month old

DC recieved oral steroids about 30 mins ago for croup. Was told to expect increased energy and not much sleep tonight however after about 5 mins DC got seriously sleepy. It's a weird sleep tho like they are half awake, mumbling and waving but eyes shut. Screws face up whne light is put on and kind of moans but stays sleepy. Will wake up slightly if encouraged. Funny snore going on too, like breathing in the holding it for half a second and forcefully breathing out. Also has extremely watery eyes, like tears almost.

Seems we are getting the polar opposite of what we were told to expect - has anyone else experienced this?

Hi OP, have you called 111?

My DS had oral steroids for croup last week, we did not have this. His sleep wasn't noticeably different overnight or the next day (only had 2 doses) but he did have a bit of a upset tummy.

Ring 999 now!

Ring 999 now!

Seconded 999 - reread your post, not being able to wake up and sensitivity to light is very concerning

We aren't even home yet, if DC is still this sleepy once we are moving about etc then I will call 111. Wonder if DC been so wiped out by the cough over the past 24 hours DC is just exhausted.

Only be another 5 mins or so.
Thanks for replies.

I'd be concerned this is an allergic reaction - 111 as a minimum, please OP!

OnNaturesCourse · 16/03/2026 20:18

That was a concern of mine!

But quick update. Home and moving seems to have woken DC up. They are walking around etc. Very fussy and watery eyed still however.

DS had steroids for croup several times, I didn't really notice any side effects at all. This does sound a bit concerning, especially the breathing. Can you go back to hospital?

WiseSheep · 16/03/2026 20:28

Not saying don't ring 111/ go back, your child's health comes first.
But this sounds like how croup presents in my now three year old and hospital are never bothered by it. It may be that the steroid hasn't made much difference.

DC is back to being fussy and very much awake but tired and fighting it so pretty much as they were prior to steroids. Cough less frequent but still horrible when it starts 😢

Another quick update for future readers. DC was much better today, still with a cough especially when lying down but it was manageable and didn't seem to hurt as much. Went to bed tonight fine but woke up with a wet cough and very flushed with a temp of 39.3 😔 settled into a feverish sleep now so looks like another restless / watchful night.

Poor little thing! How are they this morning OP? Hope you all got some sleep. My DD1 had croup at 10 months, it was horrible.
