To take sick leave?

I work in a high school, support staff. Started in January. Full time. I picked up flu /
covid type thing. Worse than a cold and knocked me out in bed. I was covering staff who were off with similar and then I got it. I’ve ended up taking 2 days off to try and recover. I feel so guilty. I physically can’t work. Is it ok to take time off when you’re poorly? I’ve never had to really before as I had a job I could work from home and used to try and carry on when I worked from home. My job in school is really physical and I get no rest / sit down.

I can't think of a better time to take sick leave. Hope you feel better soon.

If you physically can't work you're sick and you take appropriate leave.

Take sick leave if you need to recover and heal.

If you are unfortunate to have a colleague like mine, who will proudly announce that they “haven’t had a sick day in 10 years”, ignore them, they’ve probably acted as super spreaders with every virus and sickness bug making everyone else poorly too

I mean that's literally what sick leave is.

DontbesorrybeGiles · 16/03/2026 13:08

I’m curious to know what you think sick leave should be for if not for when you are unwell?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 16/03/2026 13:09

What else would sick leave be for?

Miskast · 16/03/2026 13:11

If you can't physically work then what alternative is there anyway? Hope yo feel better soon.

I think I’ve had it drilled into me that you don’t take time off . Can you get disciplined for it? I’ve been to the doctors as I needed antibiotics so have that if needed. I think I’m worried as I started in January 4th and I don’t want them to think I’m unreliable . In my last job I had zero days off but it was a home job.

also- does anyone work in schools? Do you get more poorly working in schools? I feel like I’m sneezed on by kids a lot 😂
