to feel so embarrassed I cried in front of my manager

someone please tell me its happened to them too to make me feel better 😂

Yesterday in work I cried during my return to work meeting. I have been off sick for 4 weeks. I'm still not feeling great and my last long term illness was when I had cancer 5 years ago (not too serious thankfully). My return last time was hard and some of my colleagues were not very nice when I returned and it's really affecting my return this time because I keep worrying that the same will happen again.
I ended up getting upset thinking about the past, I feel so useless at the moment

I've cried in front of 3 of my managers. I've even had a manager cry in front of me as well as countless colleagues cry. We spend a big chunk of our time at work, I think it's normal that we show emotion there and support each other.

Thank you again for all your kind comments.

I know that I need to be open with my manager but I feel so pathetic bringing something up that happened such a long time ago, I don't understand why I am even getting upset about how some of my colleagues treated me 5 years ago, most of them don't even work for the company anymore.

I have had some rough times in the last few months. I cried in front of HR. And my manager. And a coach. And another HR person. And two other colleagues. Generally, I cried a lot :D nobody minded. People are allowed feelings.
Hope your return to work goes better this time.

This happened to me today OP work and life have both been hard recently. My manager was lovely.
I hope your return goes better this time, I can't imagine how hard it must be to return after cancer and have unkind colleagues.

Another manager here - most of my team and many of my other colleagues have cried in front of me over the years . Sometimes I feel I am the odd one out for not showing more emotion. It’s normal and I don’t think any differently about people who show their feelings - your reasons sound very valid I hope you are well supported this time.

I cry at work all the time. Last time was about 90 minutes ago!

As a manager I have had pretty much everyone of my team cry in front of me for various reasons, the way I see it is that they are not just colleagues but friends who I spend most of my time with. Also part of what I am paid to do is to support my team in any way reasonable and possible and would much rather you be open then I can keep my eye out and deal with any possible repercussions.

ps I have also cried in front of about 3 of my different managers over the years and it is nothing to be embarassed about we spend most of our time with our colleagues than we do with friends and family (if you work full-time if not it is still an integral part of your life). Hopefully it has all gone well for you xx
