Am I dumb - returned my kindle to M&S

Pippinx · 08/03/2026 20:11

I dropped a clothes return into the self service return today in my local marks and Spencer’s…..with my kindle inside.

3 hours later at home I have just realised my mistake. I was carrying a lot of stuff to the car and popped my kindle in to the open return bag to make it easier to carry everything. Sealed the bag up in store and never realised….

let’s see if I will ever get it back. I have a kobo and left that on a bus once but got it back and promptly added my name to it ….but not to the kindle. I’m so stupid.

Just contact M&S, tell them what's happened, and your customer number so that they can link it to the return, and I feel sure they'll get it back to you.

Sounds like you may have too much on your mind, and aren't living in the moment if you keep doing stuff like this.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/03/2026 20:18

I hope it comes back to you. Definitely worth asking customer service for help.

Ella31 · 08/03/2026 20:47

You aren't dumb. My house keys and wallet have travelled more than I have in the last few years - particularly since I had my dd. 🤣🤣

DoomCup · 08/03/2026 20:51

M&S customer service are always really helpful - it's worth contacting them to see if they can track down your return.

I sympathise - I'm always doing things like this, usually when I've got a lot going on personally and my thoughts aren't "in the present" as a PP said.

Foxybyname · 08/03/2026 21:01

I have recently found out that parcels that are returned in store using the self service option are actually then unpacked in store and the returns processed. For some reason I presumed they would all be shipped off to some Mothership where all returned parcels met up and had a party.

Knowing this, I'm sure that if you contact the store first thing in the morning, you will get your Kindle back.

Good luck x

Rememberwhatthedoorknobsaid · 08/03/2026 21:05

If it’s a clothing store they open the bags and process returns themselves so it wont leave the store. Most likely a colleague will track your details and call you but it wouldnt hurt to give them a heads up. If its a foodhall, the parcels are collected and sent to a warehouse making it less likely you get it back but as its Sunday they probably have not been collected yet. Can you go back to the store asap?

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 08/03/2026 21:09

Yeah, sorry but that is a pretty stupid thing to do! 🤦

I left the entire bag of shopping I had just bought at the chairs just past the checkout at M&S when I had a small child... hope you get it back OP!

Buscobel · 08/03/2026 21:12

I’m not sure that’s helpful @CallingOnTheMegaphone. When you’re busy and carrying stuff, it’s not unusual to put other things in a bag. I hope you get it back OP. I’d have to buy another I’mediately if I didn’t.

hulahooper2 · 08/03/2026 21:16

My dd accidentally dropped a very good bra in a return parcel , had no idea where it was , until the company contacted her to see if she wanted it returned

Pippinx · 08/03/2026 21:32

Yes have a lot on my mind - and also in menopause so not as sharp as I used to be - in a toxic mad busy work environment (thankfully have found another job so just working my notice but it’s still BAU in terms of my workload) that I hate and a daughter heading away on her first school trip tomorrow who I’m afraid will back out at the last minute…..and a husband at home with a stinking migraine.

store was shut when I realised so I’ll be onto customer service first thing…thanks all for the reassurance and similar mistakes people have made.

If it helps OP, pre-pandemic I had a job with tons of travel, and one of my colleagues in the same job has left at least 2 and possibly 3 kindles in the seat back pocket of the plane. She still talks wistfully about them.

Cosleepingadvice · 08/03/2026 21:52

Hope it comes back to you, OP! I once got an email from ASOS that said something like "you have returned something to us that we dont think should have been returned to us. If you tell us what it is then we will arrange to send it back to you." To this day, ive no idea what it was or what I have been missing ever since.

Elaborate?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/03/2026 23:39

I honestly think this is common - not a Kindle but I have packaged up my own well worn Levi’s jeans and sent them to ASOS where I didn’t even buy them from. How? I took off the jeans to try on the ASOS order, packed up the items I wasn’t keeping, and put on my pj bottoms instead of the jeans so didn’t realise they were in the parcel. I felt like a right idiot, but I got them back!

Pippinx · 09/03/2026 17:20

Yeagh I got it back !
however customers services in M&S could not contact the store for me (seems as there are sales on all staff are on floor and no one assigned to manage the phones !)

I got the automated email this morning to say my return was processed so I didn’t want to hang about as I knew the longer I left it the lower my chances of recovery.

luckily i managed to get a chance to go back in at lunch time as one of my work calls was cancelled at the last minute and they had it set aside with the bag my returns was in. Who knows if they would have tried to contact me eventually…..

@Judystilldreamsofhorses - ha ha - you were lucky too.

Good to hear though that these companies are willing to spend time having to hunt down peoples random returns.

In this context she was calling herself dumb, so how is that offensive? Glad you got it back anyway OP

SedentaryCat · 09/03/2026 18:39

Good news OP - glad you got it back!

My mum's handbag went on a trip to London and back after she left it on the train. She didn't think she'd see it again but it came back with nothing missing.

She says she had to pay its train fare back home 😀. (She may, or may not have, made this bit up!!)
