To ask WWYD - flight home cancelled

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/03/2026 12:01

Posting for traffic - we are in Sri Lanka and due to fly home on Friday 13th with Qatar airlines, via Doha, to London Heathrow.
we booked through BA -
both BA and Qatar are saying that flights up to 8th March can get a refund.
we think we can fly to Singapore then direct to London- there are not many flights available, and it would cost around £1400 each (double our original flight).

WWYD - should we wait and see if airspace clears over Middle East?
or book another flight while they’re available and hope our original flight remains cancelled?
we can afford it but that will be savings cleared out.
please help
YABU - hold tight, air space may clear
YANBU - book another flight now!

@KatieA12B3C oh that’s rubbish! What a nightmare

It sure is. But they are safe, that's all that matters really.

KatieA12B3C · 04/03/2026 12:16

@Squirrelsandhedgehogs

Thank you, I hope so too. But like I said, at least they are safe there.

my family are trying to get back from india , after an unforeseen change in travel plans - the ticket prices are extortionate

It's a nightmare isn't it, like you said the price of tickets are extortionate 🙁
I hope they arrive home safe and well soon.

Squirrelsandhedgehogs · 04/03/2026 12:25

Yes that's the main thing @KatieA12B3C that they are safe.

Missile just intercepted going towards Turkey from Iran.

My friends DS and her DIL are stuck in Dubsi. Were meant to be getting a flight to Manchester tomorrow which has now been cancelled. I'd suggest they sup up the cost and get out of there PDQ.

Did they manage to get another flight? I hope they are OK.

Hedeghogsandguineapigs · 04/03/2026 14:18

Better to get everyone home safe in my opinion.

ZingyAquaDog · 04/03/2026 16:13

My friends are currently in Sri Lanka and have managed to book flights home via Paris. Might be an option?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/03/2026 16:32

We’ve just booked flights via Singapore, £1400 for two of us, £85 cancellation fee. Leaving five days after our planned departure.
Will wait it out with BA anyway but good to have a plan B

Fingers crossed it doesn't get cancelled like my daughters this morning. Is yours with Qantas too? But then your flight is still quite a way off. You still have 2 weeks. My daughter was supposed to have been home yesterday.

Well I had a message in the night (as it's 8 hours ahead there) that they had found another flight and booked it, for this Sunday. A straight flight from Singapore to London. About 4 hours drive to get to Singapore. YAY!
NOT ..... About half hour later another message saying the flight had been cancelled by the carrier!!!!

Now she has to do a dispute claim through her credit card now to try and get her money back for the Qantas flights.

Original flight cancelled with Etihad.

A relative is currently stuck in Sri Lanka - was due to be flying home tomorrow! They're also stuck in the same position, do you rebook via another route (expensive or sold out) or wait until your airline gives you new flight? But that would probably still be flying over Middle Eastern airspace. At least Sri Lanka is cheap and accommodation not difficult to find!

For info it's hard to avoid the whole ME but there are still routings available between places like Sri Lanka and Europe that avoid the current conflict area by a safe and sensible margin...

In any event Western carriers have been avoiding overflight of Iran for several months, so for many of those who don't need to actually fly over the Gulf or go into the Gulf airports not that much has changed and they often haven't been as hard hit by this as the likes of Emirates.

Sorry derailing othe thread but what's sri lanka like I was looking to go at some point when its feasable

I am a travel insurer by trade. You are right to highlight that the exclusion does not provide cover under your policy. However, some insurers are going beyond policy terms in the current scenario to try and help customers. If you have purchased decent cover it is still worth a discussion with your insurer.

War has not been declared ....

Oh wow really is there much to see and do

Purpl · 04/03/2026 17:58

I saw something i think on mail online maybe under money saying dont accept refund as then they no longer responsible for how you get home and how much. Research catefully as long as you are booked they have responsibility for you.

PUGMEISTER21 · 04/03/2026 17:58

Statsquestion1 · 03/03/2026 12:06

I would do this if you could afford it, would extra accommodation and spending wipe out savings too? Do you have a credit card?

Stick it onna credit card and the transfer ro a new interest free balance transfer card.

DH is currently stranded in Cyprus with easyjet saying next available flight is Saturday. Called the insurers - Nationwide Flex Plus - via Aviva - who were beyond useless. First of all their IVR took me round in circles for 15 min until I kept saying "speak to someone" on the voice recognition then the guy told me this is a new situation and they are waiting for their underwriters to confirm what is and isn't covered so he said he couldn't tell me if they would cover an alternative flight home!

Shame they didn’t just state that on IVR. Sounds very frustrating

mjhx · 04/03/2026 18:45

Statsquestion1 · 03/03/2026 12:03

So will you be eligible for a refund?

Ive read a few people say insurance isn't covering anything because it's an active War! Imagine 😩
If I could I'd pay what I can to get home quickly and safely

NoahVale · 04/03/2026 18:55

funny today there are saying, nobody calls it a war

Wildefish · 04/03/2026 19:23

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/03/2026 12:11

I don’t think we are covered as it is technically war - just checking now
i eould love to stay in Sri Lanka! Need to get back for work unfortunately, also there’s no indication how long the missile attacks could go on.

I would get home asap or you could get stranded there if things escalate. It could all blow over quickly but I wouldn’t be taking any chances. Good luck.

War has not been declared ....

I am afraid it does not matter, the wording of the exclusion is broad enough to cover war or war like actions.
