Weirdest thing (or things!) you found when moving house

After four long days I am fully moved into my new place - while my back may be aching, my wallet is happy as I did it all myself! But in the process of going into the nooks and crannies of my old place I came across two interesting things (nothing exciting like witch bottles sorry, both buildings are only about 40-50 years old).

The first was when I was checking down the back of the old sofa which came with the old flat and which I frankly never sat on as it was far too uncomfortable - just a force of habit really, there wouldn't be any of my spare change down there! And wedged between the frame and cushions was a set of car keys with bleeper (am sure that's the technical name!) and - I kid you not - 12 DOOR KEYS! All different sizes/shapes for different doors, it was like a jailer's set!

The second was when checking under the fridge and I came across what USED to be a grape, but was now a perfect raisin with a stalk and everything! Must have dehydrated itself in a nice cold space. I now consider myself an amateur winemaker (right?!) Honestly though, if I had taken off the stalk and put it in a packet of raisins you wouldn't have known the difference - fascinating!

Maybe not all that exciting (probably not) but it's made me nosy for what other people might have found on their travels. Also I don't have proper internet yet - this is all phone data - so I don't have any TV. Although I did find a box with my mum's old DVD player that she gave to me because she had no use of it and suggested I put it on eBay... clearly I never managed to, nor the DVDs she gave me with it... so at least I am now watching Knives Out! Was so weird being in a house without any background noise... this is definitely helping it feel like home!

Full set of false teeth behind a radiator.
We bought the house from one of dc's primary school teachers, longed to offer them back but never quite dared.

CinnamonBuns67 · 03/03/2026 20:19

Alot of things. Dog meat behind the kitchen kickboards (plinths) both in leaking tins and just crusted into the floor (she had candles going when we viewed), toenail clippings, a thong, an expired condom wrapper and a very old packet that used to contain some form of illegal drug . The house was owned by a woman who works as a teaching assistant at my daughters former school.

Love letters hidden in the loft from the bloke who used to live here with the (married) woman next door. That couple always talk about how much they hated the previous occupant... but I guess only one of them did.

HouseReTurn · 03/03/2026 20:45

Mouse droppings and weed growing equipment in the loft. Several units. Shitload of rubbish in the garden, 3 black bags full of takeaway boxes so far plus loads of other crap. Not even going to list the damages.

I found a golden necklace in a previous house. That was a lot nicer. :-)

TwoBagsOfCompost · 03/03/2026 20:50

Nothing inside the house but I ended up finding lots, and lots and lots and LOTS of broken glass buried alllllll over the garden. I collected and removed a big builder’s bucket worth of it, and I still keep finding bits whenever I dig deeper than 10 centimetres.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/03/2026 20:51

Not me but parents NDN’s. A vintage car with part of number plate 666 was found in the garage.

Bubbles07 · 03/03/2026 20:54

In our last house, an old suitcase in the attic containing a pair of glasses, a couple of sets of dentures and a bottle of holy water from Lourdes.

AngelinaFibres · 03/03/2026 20:54

First flat we rented was partially furnished. We found full catheter bags in the bedside cupboard and an uncut wedding cake ( 1 tier) wrapped in bubble wrap on the shelf in the kitchen.

A friend of mine moved into her house, went to sort out the garden and found a 40's pushbike and loads of 50's rubbish like tins and glass jars

We did a bit of digging and found out the house was built next to the local tip (the area isnt a tip anymore)

It really annoyed her as it created loads more work and just as she got the garden how she wanted it,she fell pregnant and she had to move to a bigger house!

I found a broken clothes mangle in the loft and a really old and tightly folded condom wrapper wedged into a gap in the mortar inside the loft. Then shortly afterwards I found an ancient very brittle and crumbling used condom hidden on a ledge in the rafters. I don’t even want to know how or why. It was an elderly couple that lived there previously.

Nincompoo · 03/03/2026 14:55

A stack of1930’s coins on the rafters when we converted out garage. I put them back with some 2019 ones.

Get yourself on google. Some of those could be worth a fortune.

When we bought our first house we offered 10% below asking. It was turned down but 6 months later with no other offers they accepted.
This seemed to piss them off though.
They took every light bulb and the batteries from the smoke alarm. They tore fitted furniture out of the kitchen leaving large holes in the plaster. They emptied their freezer into plastic bags so when we arrived it had all melted and blood was leaking out of the bags.
Then they didn’t set up a mail re delivery so had to come back looking shame faced to pick up their massive stacks of important mail.
A few weeks later when they let their cat out it returned home and popped in through the cat flap to say hello. I love cats so welcomed her and let her fall asleep on a chair in the kitchen. The lady who came to collect her had the decency to go bright red as she saw the damaged kitchen wall walking through to collect her cat.
I don’t if they ever regretted being such utter cunts but it amused me at the time.

fudgesmummy · 03/03/2026 22:08

My story isn’t so much what was left behind, but who once lived in the house.
DD and her DH moved into an old house in 2022. Chatting to the neighbours they discovered that my late mums best friend lived there as a little girl in about 1910 (My mum didn’t meet her until about 1950 when she lived somewhere else)
We gave our DD the middle name Amy, the same as my mum’s friend in memory of her….😳

RTHJ14 · 03/03/2026 22:18

A safe which we still haven’t managed to open!

LilySLE · 03/03/2026 22:29

How did you know that the grape started its life under the fridge as a grape, and didn’t get dropped in its raisin form? 🤔

DobbysFlappyEars · 03/03/2026 22:59

The oldest part of my parents’ cottage is Tudor and has a huge built-in bread oven in the fireplace. This all needed a lot of restoration when they moved in. While restoring the walls, they found a pair of men’s trousers bricked in!

redandbluecrayons · 03/03/2026 23:26

A gun cupboard in the loft - no gun fortunately.

In the main bedroom of another house I moved into were chains hanging from the ceiling, plus big hefty looking hooks attached to the walls - the previous owner was a prison officer ..

everhopeful22 · 04/03/2026 05:43

When I moved into my current house the lovely gentleman left behind several pieces of old furniture, one of being a wardrobe. On top of which I found a USED condom ! Too grim .
Really wish I had his new address as I would return it to him 🤢

Daftypants · 04/03/2026 14:55

A canoe and an entire fireplace under the house 😂

TragicMuse · 04/03/2026 15:06

No tv signal. Because there was no aerial on the roof.

The house had had a fire and the roof was replaced then it was sold immediately after all the insurance work was completed. So when we moved in we had no tv signal for ages till I looked at the roof one day and realised there was no tv aerial.

TinyR3bel · 04/03/2026 16:44

When renovating the kitchen we found a large bag of heroin and an equally large bag of what looked to be cocaine. They must have fallen behind the cupboard 🙈

52andblue · 04/03/2026 17:39

Walked in to find a huge pile of old rotten food on the sitting room carpet with a note peopped saying: 'Welcome' (it had been a difficult purchase process, but, honestly!)
A quick scoot round revealed a tall unlocked metal gun cupboard in a bedroom cupboard, with quite a bit of what looked like ammunition still in it.
I phoned the police who turned up sharpish. Amazingly, he himself came, together with (I assume) a senior officer. I invited them in & they went up & emptied the cupboard. It had been live Ammunition. As senior guy apologised I handed gitface a dustpan. He looked very embarrassed. I hope he learnt his lesson. I later bumped I to his wife in a playback who marched up & accused me if 'nearly losing him his job'. I told her he was lucky I'd found the bullets before my kids did (I dont know exactly how dangerous it was but it was really sloppy of him to leave it all)

JohnTheRevelator · 04/03/2026 18:06

I'm amazed by the number of posters who have found used condoms or condom wrappers!

Never found anything but whilst a male friend was helping me move house he picked up a small bedside table and the draw swung open and my dildo collection was in it !!! 😳

You have a collection?!

A very dusty, fully decorated Christmas tree...
And four video recorders.

Did the tree have vintage decorations on it ?
