Anyone else’s council introduced this?

We can’t just turn up at the tip now, all has to be booked in. I hate that absolutely nothing in spontaneous anymore. It’s ridiculous.

How long before they’ll add a fee?!

I’m surprised this has only just happened for you, ours has been by booking only for a good 5 years now and you can only book 4 slots per month.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/02/2026 13:07

They’ve been doing it Wales since Covid. My county (England) requires you to register your car.

redskyAtNigh · 23/02/2026 13:07

Ours has had this since Covid.
It actually makes things easier - no turning up and waiting an hour to go in as it's all pre-booked slots.
There are generally plenty of slots so you can book same day though.

Foggytree · 23/02/2026 13:08

It's been like this round my way since lockdown.

Its very doable and means there aren't long queues for the tip

clickthat · 23/02/2026 13:08

Having to book every single thing winds me up. I’ve never had to wait an hour because I go during the week.

Yep ours does too. I think we're limited to six trips a year too!

Screamingabdabz · 23/02/2026 13:08

Ours has only just stopped needing to book after covid. I think you’re a big behind the times op.

Namechange1345677 · 23/02/2026 13:09

Completely normal. Your councils behind the times op!

ShieldMaiden8 · 23/02/2026 13:10

We’ve had this since Covid!

Marylou2 · 23/02/2026 13:12

Dreading this being introduced near me. The tip is my happy place. I go at least once a week. So cathartic.

Imaginingdragonsagain · 23/02/2026 13:13

We’ve had this for years.

BlossomLeaves · 23/02/2026 13:13

Ours has done this for a few years now, lots of complaining initially but it works really well. You can typically get a slot for only and hour or so ahead of time so long term plans not needed.

TheDandyLion · 23/02/2026 13:14

Our council has just removed it. They brought it in during COVID but stopped it last year.

Enko · 23/02/2026 13:15

Utterly love it. Before there were regular 1 hour worth of queuing now straight in and out so much better.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 23/02/2026 13:15

I'm so glad my council haven't implemented this yet, I know it's coming and I'm dreading it!

OK it stops the Queues but that seems to be the only benefit. the next council over you have to book and it's usually about a 3 week wait! Then you can only book a minimum 10 minute appointment when the vast majority of people are in and out in less than 5, so the place is half empty most of the time...and this is the name of efficiency?!

I like that I have a clear out or do gardening and then when I have a car load just take it down there without having to plan it out a month in advance! If you don't want to queue you just need to be sensible with your timing

Tallpoplartree · 23/02/2026 13:16

Our council did this for a while but there was such uproar they reverted to turn up when you like.

RedRiverShore6 · 23/02/2026 13:16

Ours doesn't yet but the adjoining council has just brought this in. We go in the week though so it's ok anyway and don't have to queue.

StedSarandos · 23/02/2026 13:17

We've had to do this in Hampshire since the pandemic.
It stops queues.

You will probably find that when it's quiet in the week the staff will let you drop off a few bits though.

Twasasurprise · 23/02/2026 13:17

We've not had it here, and no plans to introduce AFAIK. There are cameras online showing the queue, so you can check before you go. We don't go very often, but have never waited more than a few minutes.

DappledThings · 23/02/2026 13:17

We've had it for years. It's fine. DH booked a slot at 9.30 on Saturday morning for 3pm the same day. No queues and no problem getting a slot.

SJM1988 · 23/02/2026 13:18

As much as it is annoying, so far its actually been quicker when I get to the tip. No more queuing for 90 mins to get in only to then find all the things are full so I cant drop off anyway.
I've used it twice and got another one booked this weekend (booked 10 days before). I haven't tried to get a slot in the summer though so it might not be as ok then.

Purplecatshopaholic · 23/02/2026 13:19

We’ve got this. I hate it too, it’s a faff.

StrawberrySquash · 23/02/2026 13:19

Jellybunny56 · 23/02/2026 13:07

Ours you can't go twice in one day. Goodness knows what you are supposed to do if you've hired a vehicle for the day. Let's all buy our own and clog up the streets - yay!

BoredZelda · 23/02/2026 13:20

They do it here, have done since Covid and it is so much better.

RedRiverShore6 · 23/02/2026 13:20

Different councils are going to vary with busyness anyway, tip is about a mile from me and next one five miles, some people have to travel miles to the tip if there aren't many in the county.
