I’ve been having heart palpitations for a couple of days now. They’re getting more frequent.

I’ve actually got bloods being done tomorrow morning due to feeling tired lately and hair loss etc. I’ve been feeling incredibly stressed and run down lately.

They’ve gotten more frequent this afternoon and evening, I’m wondering when you need to worry really?

Hi OP, I actually had bloods done last week as I’m also having heart palpitations. The doctor said if they were to get worse then go to A & E to get checked to make sure everything is ok. It might be worth heading to hospital just for peace of mind x

thankheavensforcalpol · 19/02/2026 20:41

For me they were due to low ferritin. I am actually having a 48 hour heart monitor in a couple of weeks but tbh I’m 99% sure it’s the low ferritin as they’ve got a lot better the longer I’ve been on the iron tablets.

MotherofMigraines · 19/02/2026 20:45

Might be atrial
fibrillation, I had an episode of this
recently, head to your GP to get checked out.. they should do an ECG which will confirm it

Hi OP.

I suffered from horrendous palpitations due to low B12. . Can you describe what they feel like?

In my case my heart would skip a beat and then the next beat would feel like a massive thud. Really scary, but harmless. If you are worried, though, get checked out at hospital.

I’m going to ring the GP in the morning I think. I have to go in the morning for my blood test so I’ll see if they can get me in around the same time to see a GP.

It’s A&E tonight I just can’t be bothered with, it’s a 40 min drive from us and I’ll be waiting about for hours.

Make sure they explore adrenal insufficiency as a possible cause. Also make sure they test your thyroid and vitamin D.

I had a vitamin D deficiency years ago. I now have cancer. It is truly the most unwell I’ve felt short of having cancer, and I’d say has rivaled some of my worst experiences with cancer treatment. I had no idea low vitamin D could make me so unwell.

Sorry to hear that. Low Vit D is thought to be linked to cancer too. Get well soon .

Palpitations are very common. I went through a phase and GP couldn’t find anything. They gradually went after o got checked so I think the fear made them worse. Im now post meno and don’t get them so I think it was related to hormones and low iron in the menstruating years.

glonurse · 19/02/2026 22:38

Please get a full check and ecg and if they are still present after the all-clear...

I got mine to stop with daily COQ10 and B12

springvibes26 · 19/02/2026 22:44

Hyperactive thyroid can also cause them. Good luck

Objectrelations · 19/02/2026 23:05

My bet would be low iron. I’ve had these symptoms from that.

mercutio84 · 19/02/2026 23:19

Likely all stress but you need
Bloods
24 hour ECG (GP will refer you) to capture the moment you get the palpitations
Hold off any caffeine
Support with stress such as therapy, mindfulness, meds
And if they get worse in meantime or any breathlessness, chest pain, collapse - you need 999/AE

insomniac1 · 19/02/2026 23:39

How old are you? Could if be peri?

anon12345anon · 19/02/2026 23:44

I had heart palpitations when I was feeling exceptionally stressed and depressed.
Once I got onto ADs, and life settled back into normal, the palpitations stopped.

It really shocked me how my mental health could cause these symptoms.

Hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

LoveheartBear · 19/02/2026 23:46

Worsening heart palpitations should not be ignored, and you should see your GP soon. If you are getting chest pain/breathlessness/other concerning symptoms, you must phone 999, or go to A&E urgently.

My palpitations started up again a couple of years ago, around the time I believe I became perimenopausal (blood test said I wasn’t, but I know they aren’t reliable for determining if perimenopausal).

I spoke to my GP this week about a few episodes where there are three palpitations in a row, which can be quite scary, as it feels like my heart will just stop beating. I’m going for an ECG tomorrow, and, depending on the results, I may need a 24hr monitor.

My thyroid levels were checked recently, so that was ruled out. I believe mine are mainly worsened by gastric issues, but I feel I shouldn’t ignore it, just in case it isn’t.

Namechangeyname · 19/02/2026 23:46

Feeling tired, hair loss and palpitations are exactly what I get when my ferritin levels are low.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 19/02/2026 23:52

That plus anxiety was the start of perimenopause for me. Now (post menopause) I get them as pps have said: when my vit D or iron is low.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/02/2026 23:54

It might be atrial fibrillation. If it gets worse, go to A&E. I have it quite often. It's worth getting it checked out. They will put you on a heart trace. They may give you a tablet to correct the rhythm of your heart.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/02/2026 23:56

Here, if you phone in advance, you are seen quicker in A&E.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 20/02/2026 17:58

Palpitations, hair loss and tiredness are classic low iron/ferritin issues. I had the same. A few months on iron tablets and I improved dramatically.
