AIBU to think that the UK has basically given up on ever winning Eurovision again?

Not sure what the issue is? Eurovision is known for silly music and we never win anyway

WaryCrow · 17/02/2026 09:33

He sounds like an actual musician with musical interests. I’ll be looking him up further.

Its got to be better than a song about the British problems with alcohol and the joy of having a great night out ‘so good you can’t remember what the hell just happened’, which is not, on the whole, viewed as a great cultural experience in Europe.

CanIRetirePlease · 17/02/2026 09:34

It looks ideal! does anyone actually care if we win?

my dd and I love Eurovision. I’ll be there cheering on Royaume Uni from my sofa no matter how bad it gets

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/02/2026 09:35

I think this is a step in the right direction!

PoisonCrystal · 17/02/2026 11:01

Inspired choice out of left field. Love it!

CitizenZ · 17/02/2026 11:35

Is the song available to listen to?

OneCoralGoose · 17/02/2026 11:37

Sam Ryder won in reality if he wasn't sent the year the war started he would have won. But compared to Humperdinck and Blue going this isn't awful

You can listen to some of his much earlier stuff on Spotify and probably YT, when he was part of a band called Zirba.

LlynTegid · 17/02/2026 11:51

I think that this is one event that should be on a commercial channel, you could get a lot of advertising revenue. We could manage one Saturday evening without Ant and Dec or Simon Cowell I am sure.

Here it is:

It sounds like a song that Gary Numan briefly considered using as a B-side back in the day, but rejected as it wasn't good enough.

Oh well, there's always 2027...

DestinedToBeOutlived · 06/03/2026 10:26

I'm glad they have tried something different.

Its definitely not the worst we have had.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 06/03/2026 10:27

The link doesn't seem to be working, but it's easy to find on YouTube.

No, it's not without merit - it's certainly no Jemini; but it's very 'standard' and nothing special at all.

I was gutted about Jemini, I quite liked the song. Engelbert Humperdinks offerings however.....😳

I think we need to go metal next year, or get Sam Ryder back.

LifesabagofRevels · 06/03/2026 10:35

I like it, but I am a fan of 80s synth pop anyway.

The Jemini song was perfectly fine; obviously not the tunelessness, though, whatever caused it! I actually really quite liked the Engelbert song itself, but it was more a laid-back 'schlager' style song and never suitable for Eurovision.

I'd love to see Sam come back. He already (effectively) won it once, so why couldn't he be the UK's Johnny Logan?!

It's no good sending in a perfectly decent tune, though - it has to be outstanding, memorable and performed with huge energy. Sam did that and was a massive success. I think a lot of people don't seem to grasp the fact that it isn't only rubbish songs and/or performances that do badly - you could be every single country's 11th favourite (so well into the top half) but not get a single point.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 06/03/2026 11:54

As excellent as Sam Ryder was, it's likely that he would have come second to Spain instead of Ukraine if it hadn't been for the war.

Spain substantially beat the UK in the public vote, and because of the gap between 10 and 12 points, if Spain had got all the 12s instead of Ukraine, that gap would have likely increased.

CanIbeRio · 06/03/2026 12:03

🤣 That's hilarious! Right up my street - it's giving me bonkers vibes, a bit like Fat Les with Vindaloo! Love the English reference of roly poly and custard - that's got to be a Eurovision first!! It highly likely won't win, but it's a bit of fun - and God, the World needs a bit of bonkers fun at the moment! If nothing else, it's educational - at least we will all know what 1, 2, 3 is in German!!!

Foxytights · 06/03/2026 12:21

Ha ha! I like it!

RaraRachael · 06/03/2026 12:23

It's awful - like a bad Kraftwerk song.

Last year's was beyond hideous though so not much to live up to,

RuthW · 06/03/2026 12:27

I actually like it

Edited

It's more like Landscape's Einstein a Go-Go than anything back-in-the-day-Numan might have considered, imo, but it's definitely better than last year's pile of turd 😆
