To worry about sharing drinks

Was out on a very busy Saturday night - bar was packed. Put my drink down and picked up what I thought was mine, took a few swigs and thought this tastes sugary as I had soda. Realised it was a random man’s drinks and now have been feeling disgusted that I’ve shared someone’s saliva and backwash.

AIBU to think I’ve caught some sort of disease? My throat has been sore since and had a tickle in the throat but also could be the fact it was freezing Saturday night.

Reminds me of the student "mine sweeping" days

Good times! 😄

This is a huge overreaction and you should probably consider seeking kelp for your health anxiety

Oooh – is kelp good for health anxiety?!

I’d probably think ‘yuck’ nowadays but surely there’s been a time for all of us when we were snogging strangers at the end of a night out. And yes, I used to drink the end of random people’s drinks if left on the table. Many years ago now.

Princessdiaries · 16/02/2026 20:43

@ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy That made me lol. When you put it like that it’s very true. I definitely shared some kisses with rando’s in my youth so yes I suppose you are right. Health anxiety is kicking in and making me think the worst.

Blimey. Do you suffer with anxiety generally?

Princessdiaries · 16/02/2026 20:52

@ImPamDoove yes definitely health anxiety and just general catastrophic outlook on things

Hopefully you haven't caught HPV or anything nasty. Would probably get checked if it was me.

LOL.

I think it’s generally best not to think too heavily about things like this. That way madness lies.

Coconutter24 · 16/02/2026 21:13

Tbh I’d be more concerned that you put your drink down in a crowded bar and it clearly left your sight!

B1anche · 16/02/2026 21:21

You're right to be worried OP. If I were you, I would be ensuring my will is up to date, and putting a funeral plan in place.

The statistics of people dying who have swigged a stranger's drink, speak for themselves.

Princessdiaries · 16/02/2026 21:42

@B1anche Ok this one definitely made me lol!

If it makes you feel better, there’s microscopic faecal matter on pretty much everything we touch which inevitably ends up in our mouth multiple times a day. Or maybe that makes it worse.

Best just not to think about it. We’re all Jock Tamson’s bairns.

"If it makes you feel better..."

Hands up everyone who feels better after reading @Clefable 's faecal matter fact!
