Unpopular opinions on men

I have unpopular opinions about 2 things that I’ve observed that are done disproportionately by men in my social circle. Where do you stand? I’d like to have a rounded view on things, so I am willing to be told IABU!

  1. Men with young children where both parties in the couple work full time who decide to play golf at the weekends are selfish.
  2. Men who do feats of physical endurance such as cycle the length of the country for charity are likely to be doing it more for ego and macho points than for the charity themselves. (To be clear, this doesn’t make it good/bad- just an observation)

  1. weekend hobbies are fine, everything doesn’t need to be about the kids. It just needs to be equal - and time spent with the kids too.
  2. Men and women seem to compete these sporting feats in this fashion.

My unpopular opinion about men is that they shouldn't be in nursery/infant care. And that male gynaecologists are odd.

JLou08 · 15/02/2026 13:40

I'm sure my opinions will be unpopular on MN.
Most men are good people, just like most women are.
Men's mental health matters.
Women need to stop stereotyping men as bad if we don't want young men to be influenced by incel culture.

As long as both people in the couple have equal free time, I can’t get excited about golf. Apart from it attracting a disproportionate amount of total wankers.

On the feats of athleticism thing, I have two friends, one male, one female, who do marathons. triathlons, ultramarathons, extreme marathons etc. The woman doesn’t ever do it for charity. The man often dies. His logic is that he’s doing it anyone, so someone might as well get some benefit.

Most men are alright but 24/7 social media access to ‘here all the shit men everywhere in the world’ builds an overly negative picture of them as a whole.

growing up, I was part of a mixed gender group where the guys were respectful and decent. It wasn’t until I got a bit older I realised it’s not always like that.

mondaytosunday · 15/02/2026 13:52

Weekend hobbies are absolutely fine as long as both get a chance to do them!
My DH walked, with a couple workmates, Hadrian’s wall to raise money (£65k!) for Motor Neuron disease. I assure you he did not do it for macho points.

OhMyGollyGoshGosh · 15/02/2026 13:57

I can't get excited about either of those things OP.

Golf (as boring as I personally find it) is great exercise. The only important thing is that the other half of the couple also gets time to do a hobby if they want to.

The charity thing, I mean why not? Can't see a reason for or against there.

Mydogisagentleman · 15/02/2026 14:11

I couldn't get worked up about your examples.
IME, men are individuals. Some are kind, some aren't..
Some are generous, some are as tight as a gnats chuff.
People are People

Same.

I like and appreciate men. Thank you men who built my house, deal with the heating, sewage, rubbish, deliver me my food, carry my washing machine in and install it etc.

I work in a male dominated industry and I think women can do all these things but mysteriously don’t, so thanks to the men that do.

Bubba2dueJuly26 · 15/02/2026 14:15

Most men I know are lovely people and do not fit the “typical stereotypes” that you see a lot online. I’m very aware some men are really that crap, but most of the men I know, are not. Including my DH. He is a wonderful human being.

There are just as many women I read about that weaponise incompetence for jobs they dont like doing as there are men who get accused of this.

💯 the worst experiences I have had were from women so I would never side with a woman just because it’s a woman.

Same with mine and my ds. I can’t imagine those frothing at men love their sons or actually married

The man often DOES!

He doesn’t regularly die doing ultramarathons at all

I know multiple “we don’t need men” women who won’t drive because it’s too scary 🙄
