DS (7) has been feeling poorly since Friday, has a really high temp and has been sleeping pretty much non stop. He says his throat is really sore and when I’ve had a look it’s covered in big white spots so I’m guessing he has tonsillitis. He’s drinking but won’t eat anything as he says it’s too sore.
Normally I would wait and get him a gp appointment tomorrow but we are going away tomorrow and I’m concerned that it will be harder to get him an appt whilst away. Should I call and see if a gp can see him today?

Just call 111… no brainer

Do you have a walk in urgent treatment centre nearby? If so, I’d go there.

Haggisfish3 · 15/02/2026 09:33

Some pharmacists can diagnose antibiotics for for a strep throat.

Thanks, I didn’t think of a pharmacy! Will take him to one when they open and see if they can prescribe something for him.

Ahh bless him he must be feeling awful.
I woke up yesterday morning with tonsilitis and was worried about waiting over the weekend to see the GP but my chemist saw me and prescribed antibiotics for me.
Can you get him to try some ice lollies to numb it.

I had similar symptoms with tonsillitis a few months ago. I did the online questions at the 111 site, it told me to give them a bell and they sent me to out of hours pretty quickly.

White spots sounds bacterial which will required antibiotics. Sore throat normally wouldn't. Pharmacy can help you.

Absolutely call 111. What do you mean you are going away though? Like on holiday?

summerloving113 · 15/02/2026 15:47

Thanks for all the advice. We went to boots this morning and the pharmacist confirmed it’s tonsillitis and gave him antibiotics. We are going away in a caravan tomorrow so I’m hoping he picks up a bit with the medication and gets to enjoy the trip

Hopefully it won’t take too long for them to kick in, and at least if it’s a caravan it’s easy enough for him
to stay in bed and not have to go out while he’s feeling rubbish. Hopefully it’s one of the ones with heating! Good luck OP
