County lanes AIBU

Roads are a nightmare at the moment - roadworks everywhere and google maps likes to send you down back routes to avoid it. I do a lot of driving in unfamiliar places so I don’t necessarily choose this although it’s usually fine as I drive normal sized cars and am confident and competent.

Today myself and I counted about 8 other cars ended up having to reverse for about half a mile because two Luton Vans had tried to pass each other on a single dirt track and got stuck. When our 8 cars turned around in wider hit to face the right way, there were a further 10 behind us then also had to reverse up to a clearing to leave the way the came in, including a flipping Sainsbury’s Van that still couldn’t really get through! It took me about 25 minutes to get out of it, I was late, and it was extremely stressful.

Then they have the cheek to look at you like you are causing the problem, like EXCUSE ME you are the one who has driven down an inappropriate road for your size of vehicle.

And don’t even get me started on people in Teslas on PCP that won’t MOVE OVER lest a branch brushes against their passenger door.

AIBU to say that vans and Lorries need to bugger off out of country lanes and if you are precious about your paintwork maybe you should do the same?

Edit: Country lanes!!

You mean 'country lanes' as opposed to 'county lines'!! The combination of two very different things confused me! Like a PP I thought it was about drugs.

The driver isn't totally at fault. It's sat navs. I used to work for a guy who had a lane off of a busy road to his garage. After the garage the road became a cycle path and had barriers to stop motorbikes etc.

One day a lorry tried to get to the industrial estate the cycle path leads to...it was clear by look at his sat navs why he tried!

I have a campervan. A proper sat nav which takes into account the size of your vehicle costs around £400. If you are a delivery driver on minimum wage and your boss doesn't supply a decent sat nav you use Wayz or Google Maps, which are good but don't warn about narrow roads and don't allow you to specify the vehicle you're in

Yeah sat nav’s and google maps are the worst for this. I luckily don’t drive much in the country but when I do I always watch out for narrow lanes especially as I’ve got a 4x4 (kill me now!).

Marble10 · 12/02/2026 19:50

I don’t think it’s the country lanes fault.. more down to the drivers

EleanorReally · 12/02/2026 19:54

my sat nav was always sending me down the tiniest lanes, i am not sure if there is a setting to avoid this

EleanorReally · 12/02/2026 19:56

i remember when there was a diversion down a country lane due to an accident on the main road, it was claustrophobic, cars coming from both directions, struggling to pass, a nightmare

Having done a lot of country lane driving in the past, I would also add people driving big SUVs that they cannot properly manoeuvre.

Agreed!

They do fit - there are very few roads where a tractor can’t fit and Iif the tractor can most others can

roads with length or weight restrictions round here are labelled clearly

Wish they labelled roads our way that are not suitable for long vehicles. Just because a tractor can get down, doesn't mean it's suitable for everything.

YY to the inability of people to reverse.
