I peed myself at night

NC for this.

Last night, I dreamt I was on my period (I wasn't in real life) and that I really needed to pee. Someone in my dream directed me to the toilet and I sat down on the toilet and went for a pee. Except I didn't. I peed myself in real life. Luckily, I realised quickly and made it to the toilet. My pyjamas were a bit wet, but the bed was dry.

I'm really worried why this happened. The last time I peed myself like this was when I was 20 and back from a drunken party. I remember how stressful it was to put my bedding in the wash the next morning without anyone noticing.

I'm now 47 and not on any medication that could've caused this. I've had blood tests recently and they've come back clear. I did have water before bed yesterday, but I normally do that without any issues.

I know this isn't AIBU, but I'm posting for traffic as I'm really worried that this is now going to be a regular occurrence.

It probably won’t happen again. It happened to me a few years ago and 24hrs or so later I was quite unwell with a fever. I think it was just how the illness initially manifested.

Obviously if it happens again seek medical advice, but it is probably just a one off. Bodies are imperfect and sometimes it just goes a bit wrong.

Happened to me a few years ago . I usually get up around 3am/4am for a wee but that night must have dreamt I had . As you say it just dampened your nightwear and not the bed , and if it's any consolation I've never done it since .

FlowerFairyDaisy · 12/02/2026 10:28

Were you especially tired? This happened to me once when I was incredibly tired.

I think everyone has had a dream where they need the toilet and they are looking for one. If the dream gets to the point where you believe you've found one then you start peeing! It's good you woke up and were able to stop the full flow before the real toilet.

I don't know if my body does this on purpose but whenever I have a toilet dream all the loos I find are broken or there's no toilet in there or a massive queue or something, so I wake up and then go to the actual toilet. If you could somehow train your dreams to never show you functioning toilets that might be the key to success? 😂

Sorry it's not very helpful. But don't feel bad. It's very common.

Thank you. It's really reassuring to know it's been a one-off for most people.

Ive had this a few times but never actually peed, i think its really normal and thankfully have managed to wage up but its been very close!

My first thought was get a blood test for diabetes, but that was likely checked in your recent tests.
Any urinary symptoms during the day? Frequency, burning etc? If so- I'd go to a pharmacy as might be a UTI.

Its possibly just a one off x

ForLoveNotMoney · 12/02/2026 10:41

It’s happened to me too OP. Very embarrassing and worrying at the time but it was a one-off and hasn’t happened since

Ophy83 · 12/02/2026 10:43

I'd be more worried if you hadn't had that dream - sounds like your brain got tricked

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 12/02/2026 10:51

Don’t worry. If it happens again maybe see a doctor, but this has probably happened to a lot more people than you think. When I was jet lagged on our honeymoon I peed the bed in a similar fashion, but I didn’t wake up as quick… DH used to make fun of me for it until two years ago when he sleep walked and peed on the floor in the hallway. Now we are even.

Catza · 12/02/2026 12:51

It probably happened to me two or three times over the years. Not for a while. I think it is quite normal to be honest.

I quite often have a dream where I am desperately looking for toilet, as I’m bursting for a wee. I have somehow trained myself to wake up at that point, as I know I’m about to go. I have learned not to ignore that dream!
