Off sick for years

Someone I work with has been off work sick for over two and a half years now. That seems a really long time without them being sacked or let go. Has anyone else come across anything similar or longer?

Its just another way of looking at it. What I am saying in some countries people have more protection and job security for the times they are ill. Its considered normal to take a week off for a bad cold. Its considered ok to be ill two or three times a year.
