to find the Mumsnet quote function incredibly tedious as it's so overused?

And I'm not even talking about quoting the opening post (which has now been sorted in a way).

But ... just so much quoting going on in the discussion! Why can't people address their comments directly to whoever they're quoting. Or manually quote the particular sentence or point they want to agree or disagree with? Or say something like "PP said [short quote or summary] and I think ...".

The threads are so long now and involve so much scrolling.

I was just looking at a thread and quite early on someone made a controversial post of 4 paragraphs long. Within the next page and a half it had been quoted 22 times! 22 times in an hour and a half. It was quoted 7 times in the first 10 minutes.

So boring.

And you can't quote this to be funny in reply because it's the OP. Lol!

I much prefer a reply with a quote so I can understand the context of the reply, rather
than then having to flick back to find the name of the poster they’re replying to, to be able to read the original comment to then understand the reply.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/02/2026 09:50

Before this app update, you could just copy and paste parts of someone’s post but you can’t do that anymore which is really annoying, so have to quote their whole post! Why is that!?

ThatBlackCat · 11/02/2026 09:53

YABU I prefer the quotes because I like to see who the poster is referring to. It's really annoying in a long thread when someone says something like " '@ poster' that's terrible, I can't believe you your husband did that to you, what did your parents say" and you have no idea what the husband did, (or forget what it was) so you have scroll search back to find out what the poster is referring to that the other poster said. It really irritates me. I prefer quotes because then and there you can see what they are referring to and the response. I think it should be a rule that must quote, in fact. Otherwise it makes the thread unreadable or at least hard to keep up with.

ETA: I wouldn't mind if they changed the quote function so you didn't have to quote the entire post, but just the bit/s you are referring to.

VoiceFromThePit · 11/02/2026 10:00

Quoting is useful but it should be possible to choose to quote part of a post as so many posts are so long. I agree Reddit is better formatted.

nomas · 11/02/2026 10:01

Quoting posts is much more preferable to @'ing people. On a long thread, who can remember who said what when.

This thread just proves that people will literally moan about anything and everything.

You can do this. Copy the part you want to quote, then paste it with a * at the beginning or end.

Reddit is terrible formatting with it's arrows and sections all split up going in different directions. I prefer the linear format of mumsnet.

I hind it far more annoying when someone just tags the poster they are replying to rather than quoting and says I agree so you don’t know what they are agreeing with.

Exactly, especially if the poster youre answering or disagreeing with has had many replies! It makes sense to quote their post rather than their name. I hate when a name is used, have to scroll back perhaps 20 pages to find the post being referred too - nope.

forcedtonamechange · 11/02/2026 11:10

I prefer to quote

theres a simple fix though which is to make the quoted part super short, like they do with the op

also, by bringing back the laugh emoji!!

BatchCookBabe · 11/02/2026 11:15

I don't mind it, (people quoting posts,) but I wish Mumsnet would find a way to shrink quoted posts down (like they do with the OP's first post.) So that you only see the first 8 lines maybe...

I HATE it when someone posts a post and it's really long (like 50-70 lines long or something,) and someone quotes it - as it just makes the thread annoying to read. It's especially bloody annoying when someone quotes a LONG post that has only just been posted. (Especially when someone quotes the long post immediately after it!) Like, whhhhyyyyyy?! 😖

ProfessionalPirate · 11/02/2026 11:31

I disagree it helps me to keep track of the conversation. The quote itself has a different background so it’s easy to just skip over if you don’t want to read it. Plus long quotes get hidden behind the ‘show more’ button so it’s not like you’re having to scroll past massive bodies of text.

Davros · 11/02/2026 11:36

It’s no longer possible to cut and paste a section of a post like it used to be so it’s quite a whole post or nothing. On the app anyway

I was just going to say the same.

On my phone, if a quote is longer than 4 lines, the quote box only shows the first couple of lines and then there is a little clicky link which says 'show more'.

It saves so much room as my page is not filled up with huge long quotes.

I presumed everyone has this.
Could you ask MNHQ how to arrange your settings, so it works the same?

OriginalUsername2 · 11/02/2026 11:52

Hard disagree. I don’t want to scroll back trying to find out what people are responding to.

WelcometomyUnderworld · 11/02/2026 11:58

I HATE when people @ a previous poster and don’t quote because it takes me forever to go back and find the post they’re referring to, which is sometimes pages back.

I think quote is actually an underused function (other than when the OP is quoted)

cinquanta · 11/02/2026 12:00

Why can't people address their comments directly to whoever they're quoting?

Because it isn’t as easy as just tapping the quote button. Perhaps it should be.

NO WAY to the laugh reaction, it was only ever abused and is not needed. So many of us campaigned to get it banned for that reason. There is no reason why a like can't suffice. In fact, I would be happy if all the 'reactions' were removed, each and every single one. It's really not needed.

Lol, guilty as charged. 😳 Myself and many, many other posters. But here's a laugh emoji to make it a little bit less laughless. 😂

😂😂🥰🥰 I don’t hold it against you - I get that the emoji was misused on serious threads

Expandable quotes would solve this issue.

Absolutely.

In fact I find it really annoying when someone just tags a PP to reply to as I would potentially have to scroll back a long way to find out what they are replying to

Yabu. Apart from quoting the op, I like to see the quote so I know what a person is responding to, I don’t have time to scroll back and look for it.

Same

Yes, even when someone tags me, often enough time has passed that I can’t remember what I’ve said myself!

Interesting that some posters say the quotes aren’t expandable for them. Mine are. I don’t use the app - perhaps that’s got something to do with it?
