Hope this is ok to post here!

I’m meeting my boyfriend’s parents for the first time in a couple of weeks. They’re travelling over from thousands of miles away for a holiday and we’re both really excited to meet each other. I probably won’t see them for the first week or so while they’re here and settling in, but I was going to make some cakes to give to my boyfriend the day before they arrive as a kind of welcome present for them when they arrive

i was thinking Victoria sponge cake because it’s a nice traditional British cake and I was going to put real strawberries in the middle/on top but was also thinking some scones as well. But then I started thinking would something more adventurous be better? Or maybe a pavlova instead? Or something a bit fancier?

im aware I’m probably overthinking this, but I just really want to make a good impression🥲 Would a Victoria sponge cake be a nice welcome cake? Or something maybe a bit fancier?

no allergies etc

thanks so much!

I think the Victoria sponge or scones sound like a lovely idea.

Good luck hope all goes well☺️

Victoria sponge and some scones (maybe fruit scones?) sounds perfect, I don't think you need to do anything fancier than that.

Can’t go wrong with a Victoria sponge and scones. Very British! Love them!

BarnacleBeasley · 10/02/2026 09:33

I think a Victoria sponge would be lovely. I would not put real strawberries in it though because (a) they are out of season so won't be very nice, and (b) you're doing it the day before they arrive so they'd make the cake go soggy. Just some delicious jam would be fine. Also I'd probably do biscuits instead of scones because scones are much nicer fresh and you could have those when you actually meet them. But they could have the biscuits for a few days at the start of their holiday.

I don't think I'd put the fresh fruit in or on the sponge. If they don't eat it all in one sitting it'll look unappetising.

Scones are great but best on the day of baking. Maybe a coffee and walnut or lemon drizzle?

Snap with the strawberries and a good idea about biscuits as they will keep. Maybe shortbread?

Chuffingcupboard · 10/02/2026 09:39

Cake sounds lovely. I would probably make shortbread though, it keeps for weeks, they can nibble if they are peckish, it's still traditional.

Skybluepinky · 10/02/2026 09:48

Avoid the strawberries as out of season and it has raspberry jam not strawberry, but what a lovely idea.

Sweetiedarling7 · 10/02/2026 09:57

Fruit cake keeps longer and is still traditionally British.
Also not so prone to the possibility of sinking as a sponge.

5128gap · 10/02/2026 10:02

Victoria sponge is great. However sweet scones will be a bit samey with it as its more cream and jam. I might go for a savoury scone if I wanted to make scones. Or a different sweet thing, maybe chocolate, to add variety.

MamaBobo · 10/02/2026 10:10

Victoria Sandwich sounds great as lots of others have said. Very British and has a nice universal appeal. Good quality jam for the middle. Yum! I definitely wouldn’t go with Chocolate or Coffee cakes as, in my experience at least, some people don’t like them. Same with Fruit cake, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Shortbread or even Millionaire’s Shortbread for the other thing? Both keep well and make a nice energy boosting snack. Your boyfriend should know which they would find more appealing?

DragonsAndDaffs · 10/02/2026 10:18

Lovely idea but it might be better to keep it simple. Where are they staying, will they be able to store the cake.
Don't make too much, a whole victoria sponge and scones sounds OTT.
