To take this job on?

I work freelance and have been approached by a guy to do a particular job. I'm not saying what as it's likely to expose. I met him and his wife, who are old now. He went on to tell me about their life as swingers and running sex parties but they said they're too old for it now being deaf and with hip and knee replacements!! They said they told me for full disclosure. I said fair enough but it's not in my wheelhouse and I won't be discussing it and we went on to talk about the job. The proposed work is nothing whatsoever to do with this. It's a good job, but would I be linked with any of this activity if for example he shared it on Facebook and anyone thought I'm a swinger? Or am I being silly?

Someone who shared their sexual proclivities with me as part of a conversation that is supposed to be about a freelance role completely unconnected to what they do behind closed doors would make me feel really gross about that person and so it would be a no. Obviously.

Yes that's what I'm thinking. He was surprised I hadn't heard of them, as if they're famous, but I'm half their age and have zero knowledge of this sort of thing anyway!

Edited

It’s gross and fairly disrespectful to introduce it into conversation like that. So uncomfortable.

I would think it very odd if someone approached me about freelance work in a totally different area yet told me about their sexual interests which were irrelevant to the work being done.

Why would anyone discuss their sexual preferences with their partner to someone they were hoping to hire professionally in an entirely different field??

I wondered that, but I thought perhaps he thought that if I told anyone I had a new client and named him then they'd mention it, and that I would be annoyed to find out that way. That's the only reason I can think of. It wasn't mentioned again after they'd told me.

Are there any famous swingers though really? I can’t name one!

WallaceinAnderland · 09/02/2026 22:16

He sounds predatory. I'd give him a wide berth.

In the local area I think he meant. It's so far off my radar it's vaporized.

He’s a dirty old bastard. He’s over sharing and testing your boundaries, and it won’t be the last time he mentions it.

I would also give him a very wide berth, unless I was absolutely desperate for the money. Then I would drop him.

MeghansToes · 10/02/2026 01:24

Grim. Avoid.

Eenameenadeeka · 10/02/2026 01:32

I'd avoid, seems incredibly off to have brought it up at all.

I would probably decline the work in your place. In my job I had no choice but to mix with prison inhabitants but you do have the option not to engage.

Many years ago I managed a public library which also serviced the local male prison. I had to visit from time to time to discuss stock. First time the officer who ran the library threw down some soft porn magazines that were available to inmates. He had obviously done it to see my reaction. I leafed through them and laughed that there was nothing here I would not have found on the top shelf of the local magazine shop. Then I told him a really filthy joke. I think he was more shocked than he imagined I would be. Next visit the conversation was purely about books. There's more than one way to put a creep in their place. I never had a problem with him again.

Whilst I dont disagree that i wouldn't work with this guy and hes a weird oversharer.... its a bit mych to compare him to convicted criminals with a lack of any evidence that he's actually done anything illegal.

Would this have been in Sheffield? The infamous La Chambre club? Closed for years now. Bit of a joke locally.

No it's in the West Midlands. He didn't mention a club, just that he organised parties. I imagined the keys in the fruit bowl sort of thing.

Best ever comment from Victoria Wood.." I went to one of those parties where you all throw your keys in a bowl.....I don't know who got my moped, but I drove that Nissan for years!!"
