To understand how people look good with slicked back styles?

This post is only 20% serious but slicked back styles have been very fashionable for a while now and a seemingly endless amount of women look great in them. But the second I try I look like a drowned rat or, if it's a ponytail, like one of the founding fathers of the USA. If you pull of a slicked back style how do you do it??

*I'm aware the problem is probably me and my head/face shape.

I have a potato face 🥔 and wanted the clean girl tied back hair look. So I had a long fringe cut. I now put my hair back in a chouchou and just have a fringe which looks so much better.

sundaysurfing · 05/02/2026 08:37

I do think that there are some people that the slick back style just doesn’t work for. You might be one of them…. But just keep checking out different YouTube videos and trying this style was. See what friends think.

Pineapples123 · 05/02/2026 08:39

Accessories and glowy skin! If I did a slick back without either of those I’d look Miss trunchball 😆

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 05/02/2026 08:46

I also look ridiculous. Both myself and my daughter have to have hair bits at the front. Our face shape just doesn’t suit it.

giveyourselfapresent · 05/02/2026 09:57

Very rarely do I like this look on anyone, even models and actresses. Even the ones who do pull it off look better without it IMO.

Candlestickinthediningroom · 05/02/2026 09:58

I tried a slick back. My child said I looked like a wrinkly potato. I'm sticking to frizz and messy buns.

500daysofspring · 05/02/2026 10:02

Any time I try a slick back I look like Humpty Dumpty. I just don’t have the head or face shape for it!

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 05/02/2026 10:14

Usually it’s only very attractive people it looks good on. And even those people would probably look better with a different hairstyle. Just because it’s a trend doesn’t mean you should do it if it doesn’t suit you. Real style is knowing what looks good on you.

bloomchamp · 05/02/2026 10:18

I look like miss trunchpole when I’ve attempted this style

Devilsmommy · 05/02/2026 10:23

I've done it for years and I don't know if it's the shape of my face or what but it always suited me. Can't have it anymore because I chopped it all off into a pixie cut. When it gets long again I'll go right back to it I imagine, I'm too lazy for styling longer hair😂

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 05/02/2026 10:24

I look like my dad in drag if I try it.

Trainstrike · 05/02/2026 10:27

As above, I just look like a man with greasy hair.

Same here but I don't suit having my hair loose. It's in a slicked back bun or ponytail 99% of the time. I always see women with immaculate loose, flowing hair (straight or wavy / curly!) and get so jealous! Even if it's just in a bob / short. Literally no hair style suits me 😭

If I use straighteners then it goes flat to my head and doesn't suit my face shape at all and if I leave it (just blow dry) then it's frizzy and just completely shapeless and sad. It does actually suit me curly / wavy but I rarely have the time to do it and even when I do, it starts to drop out really quickly.

So ponytails forever it is😭😆

You sound just like me😂 since I was at school I had either a ponytail or a bun or crocodile clip with it slicked back. Shit loads of hairspray to keep it completely clicked down. I only stopped at age 39 because of having the pixie cut. Which though it really suits me, it's just too much upkeep for my lazy self😂 I'm growing it out now and it's almost a bob, but because I've got a slight wave to my hair naturally it means I have to straighten it otherwise it kinks out all over the place 😒 can't wait to be able to slick it back up in a ponytail 😂 have you looked for any products that could help keep your hair smooth with just a blow dry?

GreenEyesIsBack · 05/02/2026 11:42

I look like moonface if I try it

ASometimeThing · 05/02/2026 11:48

When I was young and lovely and had a perfect jawline, I used to wear my hair completely slicked back. Now I’m 53, I’d look utterly hideous.

It's so annoying isn't it?! I always think to myself "right, for this meal / night out / event I'm going to make sure my hair looks amazing and NOT tie it up for once", then spend so much time trying to make it look half decent and inevitably scrape it back into a ponytail after about half an hour 😭I feel like I should play for the Lionesses 😂

My wedding day was the last time my hair looked nice down and that was only because it was done my professionals, I had multiple trials to be happy with it and then it was sprayed to within an inch of it's life so it didn't drop!

I have SO many products but none seem to work?! The latest one I have heard about (but not tried) is the Colour Wow Dream Coat so might buy that and see if it's any good 🤔

My wedding day was the only day I wore mine down and I hated every minute of it 😂 to b fair I was nearly 9 months pregnant and it was August 😅 you can believe it went straight back up after the wedding 😂

Devilsmommy · 05/02/2026 13:13

@Starlight1979 if I hear of any really good products for wavy/curly hair I'll let you know 😊

Oh my worst nightmare - hot / humid weather with hair stuck to your neck - that would ruin my day😭Although tbf ours was a really windy day so my hair was blowing everywhere when we were having photos taken! I was gutted I wasn't allowed to keep my trusty bobble round my wrist 😆

Dragonscaledaisy · 05/02/2026 13:27

I need to slick back my long hair in two parts for it to look perfect. Hair and skin both need to be flawless for me to carry off this look so I invest a lot of time in both.

ADogRocketShip · 05/02/2026 13:54

I rarely think it looks good on people tbh - its a really harsh style so you have to be a very particular type of face, and rest of clothing and accessories really matter or it can easily verge into the Vicky Pollard type look far too easily, or even Miss Trunchbull! It can also look quite greasy if you have to use a lot of product to slick it back and I couldn't be doing with getting hair that dirty as I like to go a few days between washes at least!

I never wear my hair up except for when at the gym. I just look bad with hair up generally as my face needs framing. I also prefer messier styles as they're more feminine IMO.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 05/02/2026 13:56

It looks better if I put my hair in a high ponytail but ultimately I just have the wrong face with a massive forehead!

Gahr · 05/02/2026 14:03

I don't think it looks good unless you are absolutely breathtakingly stunning. A lot of the celebrities who have that style don't look good at all IMO. An example is Hailey Bieber, she seems to wear that style a lot and I just think it makes her look like her uncle William!
