Unmarked police vehicle

While stuck again in traffic this morning I was thinking. What if someone adapts their unremarkable grey/black car with a great replica or an unmarked police vehicle siren. How would they be caught using it? Are road cctvs automatically checking the number plates of unmarked police cars, or ambulances for that matter, to make sure that they are real?

My understanding is that when an emergency goes through a red light or speed camera it still triggers it but the fine is discounted. So here they would get the fine as normal so no benefit?

ThePoshUns · 04/02/2026 14:09

Yes if an emergency vehicle marks or unmarked goes through a speed or traffic camera, their organisation is still notified as per any other company, the driver identified and they have to show why they went through the camera / lights etc;
They don’t get a free pass unless it’s a genuine emergency.

Samewrinklesnewname · 04/02/2026 14:12

The fine is disregarded IF the cop driving notifies the control room who will record it…when the fine is issued, it gets married up to the incident it’s recorded on. I’ve not heard of a cop having it enforced in my 20+ years in a control room

ColdAsAWitches · 04/02/2026 14:29

Local police will know which cars actually belong to them. If they drive past a real police car while pretending to be unmarked police, they will be in for a world of trouble.

Hoardasurass · 04/02/2026 14:30

The person who did this would be liable for the traffic fines and points aswell as facing criminal charges for impersonating a police officer/vehicle and dangerous driving.
Only an idiot would risk a fine points on their licence and jail time just to skim a traffic jam

Apart from the last message, which really is not in the spirit of my op, thank you all for yours, I have learned something new today and it will make a great topic of discussion with my children!

Consequences are not in the spirit of your op

Thestormishere · 04/02/2026 17:19

No no, consequences are interesting, it’s the gratuitous foul language that I don’t see the need for. But mine was an unnecessary reaction, you rightly do you.

Are you hallucinating? There has been no foul language anywhere on this page!

Yeah I'm totally lost with that comment too

What "gratuitous foul language"? 🤔

Was it impersonating normal language, OP?

ThatSereneRedSeal · 04/02/2026 18:13

In our policing team, cars are booked out to you and if a ticket arrives you are in trouble & have to pay. It could be a parking ticket, bus lane fine, speeding… we can try & get it cancelled if it was a genuine reason but even police have rules with how fast they drive & where they can park.

RightOnTheEdge · 04/02/2026 18:14

Erm what? There is no foul language on this thread.
Are you referring to the word idiot? Confused

Redflagsabounded · 05/02/2026 07:37

Unusual topic to choose to discuss with your children. Do you know someone who does this, OP?

INeedAnotherName · 05/02/2026 08:46

There was no foul language used OP.

It will make a great topic of discussion with my children!
Ummmm.. I don't think I've ever had a discussion regarding impersonating emergency workers 😮

Saying that only an idiot would commit several crimes to beat a traffic jam is not gratuitous language.
