On a place in the sun the vendor came back with £166,000. The buyers then put in an offer for £165,000 which wad accepted. All for the sake of £1,000. Why do it?

It’s a cheap house so it’s quite possible that £1000 was a dealbreaker for the buyers or the difference between being able to afford renovations or a removal company etc.

Look after the pennies...

People think they’re hot shot negotiators. I blame Kirsty & Phil.

TheIceBear · 31/01/2026 20:12

Well you could spend that 1000 on a city break somewhere else. Especially if you are spending the last of your budget on a place, different if you are loaded . Every bit of cash counts! That said it seems like a minimal amount and you could try and haggle a bit more than that

DaughterOfPearl · 31/01/2026 20:14

Because £1000 is better in my bank account than someone else's.
You can buy an awful lot of paint or household supplies for a £1000.

SteelMaiden · 31/01/2026 20:18

Why not

user1469569516 · 31/01/2026 20:18

It's the offers 25% below asking price that annoy me.
It's not a cheeky offer, but disrespectful.
If people want a turn-key property for under took, they're dreaming.

A woman I used to know was selling a house some 10 years ago, and she and her DH were asking £175,000 (2 bed semi, West Midlands.) The lowest they would accept was £172,500.

A buyer came along (man and his wife,) and liked everything about the house, but he (the man) said they will only pay £172,000, so £500 less than my friend and her DH wanted to drop to. Neither man would budge - all over £500. Friend's DH said 'no, £172,500 is the lowest we will go.' The man in the couple said 'no £172,000 is our top offer.' Stupid, pig-headed, arrogant men, both of them. My friend, and the man's wife were both begging their husband to stop being daft, and give it up. Both refused. My friend and her DH lost the sale, and the woman in the couple was in floods of tears, because HER DH refused to pay the extra £500! (And the lost the house!)

Never knew what happened to the couple, but my friend and her DH didn't get another viewing for 3 months, and no offer for 5 months, and in the end they sold for £167,500. (Thanks to her husband.) Five grand less than the lowest they wanted to drop to. And eight grand less than the original asking price... Utter fucking madness. Just so he could prove his bollocks were bigger than the other blokes. 🙄
