Red light -Bury New Road junction

Firstly I need to say, I am so devastated about this. I’ve never run a red light in my 15 years driving. However today, driving out of area in Bury, I ran a red light at a junction on Bury New Rd.

Thank goodness it was quiet, no accidents etc, but it could have been awful.

I’m not sure how long it was Red, but it was a red light and then very shortly after another red light. I was so focused on the further one I didn’t register that the first one was a red light in its own right as opposed to a part of the other one. No excuse but context.

I’m not one to panic like this usually but I have horror thoughts of losing my driving license, £1000 fine etc. I need my license to work, and am panicking about it now.

Anyone from Bury who knows Bury New Rd ? I can see from googling they have red light cameras

AIBU to think I’ll get a very serious consequence?

You are not likely to lose your driving license for jumping a red light - worst case you may get points and a fine. Are you always this anxious?

BigOldBlobsy · 30/01/2026 13:26

Nope, I’m a therapist and usually I’m fine at self regulating/self checking - but I find I am really worried about this as I’ve never done this before. Tbf I’m having a bad week and this has compounded it possibly

"The current penalty for failing to stop for a red light is usually an £100 fine and three points on your licence. The points will stay on record for four years.
If you fail to sign or respond to a notice of intended prosecution (NIP), or provide the details of the correct offending driver if disputed, you could face prosecution, six penalty points and a maximum fine of £1000."

You’re way overthinking this. You’ll get a fine, if you get anything at all. Chances are you won’t.

Sorry you’ve had a bad week, don’t let this get to you and make it worse

BigOldBlobsy · 30/01/2026 14:03

Thank you all
That is what it says online, I am overthinking because I’m so upset with myself. Carelessness!

I ran a red light by mistake a couple of years ago. I did an online road awareness course instead of the £100 fine and points. That is all that will happen if it had cameras.

newmenewwhatever · 30/01/2026 15:39

I’m from Bury, you will get the option of a course or fine & points.

Soontobe60 · 30/01/2026 15:40

Whereabouts on BNR? I live about 5 minutes away from it.

CarolwithoutanE · 30/01/2026 16:39

Not far from Bury New Road, off the top of my head, I can’t say I have noticed any cameras etc, and sometimes it is easy to lose concentration when driving, sometimes zoning out. What will be will be, but try and use this feeling you have now to learn from going forward. You can’t change what happened, but you can stop it from happening again.

Edited: apologies, I see you say it does have cameras, I can’t say I have actually noticed them before!

Littlebobbin15 · 30/01/2026 16:45

In prestwich? Regardless I doubt you’ll get £1000 fine and a ban, just take it as a wake up call to concentrate.

BigOldBlobsy · 30/01/2026 17:32

Thank you for your answers
@Soontobe60Hard for me to describe, I’m not from that area, it was a stretch of the road that had two sets of lights quite close together before a roundabout type thing. That’s not helpful though! @Littlebobbin15yes Prestwich I believe, absolutely, I will.

There’s a double set of lights near where I live (not Bury) and I wish I had £1 for every time I’ve seen this happen!

BigOldBlobsy · 16/02/2026 08:21

As an update, haven’t had a red light ticket yet and it’s been over 2 weeks
