Nasty comments but turned back onto me again

This morning DD11 was in bathroom as her dad left for work, he shouted up ‘love you bye’ she didn’t hear, I was in bedroom so said dad said bye. She shouted back ‘bye love you’ as she came out of bathroom. He replied in a nasty sarcastic voice (not a funny joking one at all) ‘yeah I bet you do’ - her face fell so I said to him that was uncalled for. He then shouted at me really nasty that I was making something of nothing, thank you so much, have as really great day etc then slammed door and went.
i guess this is just another example of what he does all the time, its like treading on eggshells with his moods and how he behaves but he always turns things like this back onto me and I question myself so much

Look up the term ‘gaslighting’.

Abd80 · 29/01/2026 08:12

This is cruel and abusive. He is gaslighting you I agree.

I think I’m beginning to think this too but I’m still not sure as I get so confused and sometimes really can’t remember the conversations like these, that’s why I wrote it out this time. It’s like my brain gets really muddled up and freezes. Which is ridiculous really as I hold down a responsible job and am seen as highly competent!

He sounds unpleasant. Your poor dd

yarnar · 29/01/2026 08:29

Would you be happy if your daughter ended up married to a man who treats her like that? Because that's what she is witnessing and thinks is the norm. I'm sorry he's being a dick. Reevaluation needed I think.

BellissimoGecko · 29/01/2026 08:33

All this over your dd not hearing him? What a pathetic, weak specimen he is.

If this happens all the time, op, how do you feel about it?

pinkfondu · 29/01/2026 08:42

Your poor daughter. Show her what to do if this type of ‘love’ ever finds her

Uhghg · 29/01/2026 09:08

I would have assumed he was joking?

If he was being serious then what a nasty man he is.

Well done for sticking up for your DD but I’d be messaging him and telling him not to speak to her like that again or else don’t come home.

My ExH was like this. Ex for many reasons, but it was such a relief not to have to deal with stuff like this on a daily basis!
