Which location for Xmas hols (not a Xmas thread!)

I finally went to nyc for Xmas last year. Me and my dc.

the thing is, we didn’t get to see too much of it, due to dc being young and neurodiverse

we did times sq, the rockettes and Macy’s, Central Park and the subway

I didn’t love Xmas day in nyc myself, I missed home and Eastenders and a roast dinner and mint sauce😂

so I have a choice to make. I want to go for a week this time with dc, just before Christmas

but do I go to NYC again, and try to take in many more of the sights, now I know how my dc will cope. Or do I go to Chicago, another place I’ve wanted to visit for the first time?

wwyd

yabu - chicago
yanbu - nyc again

I voted YABU for considering travelling to the US at all. To visit means condoning the current regime's approach to not only their own country's human and civil rights, freedom, democracy and justice, but their destructive global actions as well.

If you support the current U.S. administration, ICE and their blatant abuse of power, including state-sanctioned violence/murder, feel free to visit. It’s not even about political beliefs or personal safety, it’s about having a moral compass, compassion and ethics.

tinytinyviolin · 28/01/2026 19:26

Why does it need to be the US? I wouldn’t visit at the moment.

Aside from that, is it specifically a winter city break you want? I’m not sure why it would be much different this year if they didn’t cope well last Christmas.

FriendsWithoutBenefits12 · 28/01/2026 19:27

Go to NY for Halloween! Amazing!

it has to be New York or Chicago 😅

dc coped fine! But we had to go at a slow pace, and for example, I realise I needed to plan food better, and get a hotel that has room service, pack different clothes and extra trainers (dc wet their only pair and lost a croc so I had to buy new trainers which was a faff)

just logistical stuff

more time, better organisation from me and we should able to do much more

🥺🥺 ice are terrible and I agree that the orange man isn’t good

but we still need to enjoy our Christmas 😅

Also going to both will stress me out, just one set of flights I think

I have an opinion, but I'm not giving it to you. That's because you support the Trump regime, and don't care. You have choices and can enjoy Christmas outside of the US, use those choices.

Boycott the US until he's gone then. The world is a big place. And if you go, you DO support the Trump regime. It's very simple really.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/01/2026 19:39

But why the US? Unless you are already in USA.

if they’re ND does it need to be a city break? You could do a snowy holiday, a ski resort in Europe (or US/Canada if you really need to cross the Atlantic). Or a beach holiday.

crumpet · 28/01/2026 19:39

I would go to New York, in that case. It’s already familiar, you’ve ticked off some of the things on the list and there’s plenty more to do.

fine, I will just abandon my lovely Christmas with my dc because ooscal thinks it makes me seem like a trump supporter and won’t give me their opinion on chicago or New York

Correct.

828Pax · 28/01/2026 19:41

I love both, Chicago I found was less chaotic than New York. Based on what you are saying about DC, then I'd suggest Chicago is the better option!

i kind of was thinking this. They will only be 7, still quite young

the hotel we stayed at before though was in Times Square - which I loved, but didn’t have room service, which I think I would’ve liked as dc could’ve had French fries delivered when hungrY

food was a problem for us tbh

a hotel in midtown would be better for sightseeing I suppose but dc would cope better at the same hotel imo

I liked Chicago when I went but I was 20 and not lugging small children with me. It's not enormously walkable.

it has to be a magical city for Xmas!! I’m a lover of Christmas in New York

but I have wanted to go to the windy city and wistfully listen to ‘Chicago Freestyle’ by Drake. Would love to take dc to see the bean and cross it off the list

paris isn’t what I want right now, but one day

ooscal · 28/01/2026 19:46

I think (depending on the ages of the kids) they might enjoy a magical time in Rovaniemi and enjoy the amazing wonder of Santa and the elves and sleighs etc. etc. in Lapland.

In fact it might be warmer there than Chicago or New York.

i love winter so abhor the idea of a beach in December 😂

London
Paris
New York

I don’t want Christmas in Milan or Paris right now

Like many others, I wouldn't be choosing to go to the US right now but since you're set on going anyway, I'd stick with NYC. I really like Chicago, but I wouldn't choose to go there in winter.
