To believe in ghosts?

Starting a woo thread for spooky, creepy, strange experiences! Has anyone got a true ghost story they would like to share to liven up a dull Monday morning? 👻

I wouldn't put it in AIBU! I mean, by all means start a 'woo' thread, but, by definition there's nothing at all reasonable about believing in ghosts!

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 26/01/2026 11:20

Best in the paranormal section, unless you want to encourage people to come and tell you how stupid you are.

I didn’t know there was a paranormal section? 👻

It’s not unreasonable to believe in ghosts, nor to start a woo thread. Unfortunately, as others have noted, some posters will soon be along to spoil the fun!

It's literally 'unreasonable', in that it's not a belief that can be arrived at via reason. Which is not to say anyone shouldn't start woo threads, just that they sit oddly with the concept of reasonableness.

I think ‘ghost’ sightings more credible when a few of you see them at the same time.

Tunnocks34 · 24/08/2026 23:58

So this is 10000% true. Not embellished. Not exaggerated.

I am really logical, an atheist. Do not believe in anything.

My granny died around 8 years ago (I am English but my daddy, and my granny are Irish) and she lived in Ireland. Anyway when she died, she left her house to my daddy. We go over 8-10 times a year (sometimes together with my DH and kids and mammy, sometimes I’ll go just my DH and kids and vice versa) but for most of the year it is empty.

Anyway, nothing has ever really happened in the house to me, although there is sometimes a feeling of being watched at night, but it’s an old house, in the middle of nowhere so I just put it down to human fear rather than anything actually being there. Until this trip. I had to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, my bedroom is at one end of the hallway, and the bathroom the other. It’s about 6m long so quite long. Anyway as I go to the bathroom (and this was three nights ago) there was a man in front of the bathroom door. Now, I was half asleep, and genuinely froze out of panic because I just knew this man wasn’t human, he didn’t really react to me although he did look down at me. Weirdly I was terrified but also didn’t get an ‘evil’ vibe from him. After a couple of seconds I came to me senses, screamed and turned the light on and when I turned back round he was gone. Anyway go back to my room, wake my husband up (how I woke no one up I will never know) and made him come with me whilst I had a wee. All fine - finally drifted off and woke up in the morning,

As my daddy comes down I told him and my mammy what had happened. And my daddy goes ‘oh you mean the man in the suit with the hat?’ I said yes (I hadn’t described how he looked) and my daddy says ‘oh he’s been there since I was a little boy you just have to push passed him he won’t follow you into the bathroom, he just walks the hallway’

And that was that. My first, and hopefully last ghost. I’m back in England now and honestly a bit terrified of going back home to Ireland again after that!

Well
after what I and DH experienced in the Edinburgh vaults yesterday. Yes I do

InkyWink · 25/08/2026 02:06

@Tawneylittle go on...

menopausequeen · 25/08/2026 02:07

i do. As a student nurse in an old teaching hospital I had several encounters with ghosts.

keepswimming38 · 25/08/2026 04:17

I had a night of hell as a newly qualified staff nurse once in Leeds General Infirmary. No apparitions but doors slamming, intense smells and lavender perfume in the linen cupboard, doors stuck and wouldn’t open. We were glad to vacate that ward in the morning!

TheTwinklyLemur · 25/08/2026 05:37

I haven't personally, but when my Mum was a young girl she used to see a man standing in her bedroom at night. To make matters worse, someone told her that somebody had hanged themselves in that ouse. The last time she saw ,him, he was sitting down and she never saw him again.

Tawneylittle · 25/08/2026 11:40

I felt a tug on my sweatshirt and something holding my hand. This was before the person doing the tour tells us there is a little boy ghost called Jack looking for his mum and he sometimes holds hands with a lady on the tour. To tour guide said she knew I felt something as I suddenly turned round as I felt the tug.

No one else felt it and no one was behind me. He held my hand till we were about to go into the vault with the bad ghost and then let go. Don’t feel freaked just a bit sad for him. I always thought I would be really scared if I came across a ghost but this was a really weird calm sadness. I hope he was comforted even for a short time. A lot of people will be cynical but I know what I felt and how I felt.

Only certain people are able to see it

Onegiantpupil · 25/08/2026 11:54

@Tawneylittle was this in Mary Kings Close? When I looked at the OP I immediately thought about the time I was down there, told my DH I could sense someone, just before we went into a room where the tour guide announced that there are stories of the ghost of a child and people leave toys for them and they took us over and there was an old fireplace filled with toys

For me I can’t say I absolutely believe in ghosts, I’ve sensed things in certain places and others I guess have then told me things afterwards which has reinforced what I had felt.

I am agnostic but do love a ghost story and would describe myself as a spiritual person

Around 20 years ago , i was working in a care home for the elderly. It was a new building, one of the other members of staff told us she had seen a ( ghost ) . It was a old man wearing trousers a white shirt and braces, he just appeared in the door way to the staff room. She left soon after, i stayed for 7 years , working the night shift , i saw nothing and forgot about it . Then one night , i was on my own in the staff room. I saw something out the corner of my eye, when i looked up. I saw the ( ghost ) that my colleague had described all those years before . I was really spooked , i saw him one more time before i left

BreezyClouds · 25/08/2026 14:36

I'd love to hear what 'a ghost' is to you?

Is it like seeing a person, and can you interact with them or are they unaware of you?
Or more feeling a spirit? A voice? Poltergeist?

BreezyClouds · 25/08/2026 14:38

It's not spooky but I remember seeing a man in a brown suit sitting on the bottom of my bed when I was about 6 and staying with my great uncle in his 300 year old house.

No interaction, I wasn't afraid, he was just sat there and I fell back to sleep.

inkgirl · 25/08/2026 14:41

I have a few. The first one was when I was 16 and at home alone. I felt like someone was watching me and could see a figure in the corner of my eye turned around and nothing was there. My mum went to a medium a few days later and told her that there was an old soul attached to the flat we lived in who liked to look out for me when I was home alone.
2nd one was when my son was 5 weeks old, I was sat at my dads when I heard a voice say he's going to die. I knew they were talking about my dad, a week later my dad passed away.
The 3rd one I was at my then boyfriends house went to go to the loo and had that feeling agsin where someone was watching me. For some reason I felt it was an old lost soul like he was looking for someone but couldn't find them. Spoke to my boyfriend about it a few days later he tells me he spoke to his neighbour who said an elderly man used to live there and looked after his wife there. His wife went into a home and he passed away at the home.

Lilypad34 · 25/08/2026 14:45

I believe but my DB the ‘rational scientist’ doesn’t yet can’t prove they don’t exist. It’s a subject that comes up from time to time. He says I’m batshit, I do not care. I haven’t imagined the things I’ve seen, not every unexplained thing is paranormal. I’m really hoping aliens land on his lawn one day 😬
