Ideas for husband’s 40th birthday?!?!?

RealReginaPhalange · 22/01/2026 19:18

I have none! I have 3 months to save. I am usually great when it comes to gifts but I already gave him everything he needed/wanted etc🤣

money is short, just went back to work after maternity, no family around so no party possible. I thought I could pull off Paris for a weekend in the summer but wont save that much. Two small kids and childcare issues so if i take him away it has to be for a night or two max and in the summer when my mom is here to stay with kids while we are at work, but i still have to book it in advance! He’s got an expensive smart watch, leather backpack, doesnt need a new phone. He is a bit overweight so no experiences like a helicopter/balloon flight etc

any ideas lovely people?

Does he like wine whisky gin ? Lots of places do tours and tasting sessions.

Or a fancy hammper with cheese , crackers , pickles , chutney and wine .

Does he have any hobbies or crafts that you can buy extra things for.

Moonnstarz · 22/01/2026 19:38

Does it have to be without kids? For my husband's birthday (and what I plan for mine) is a nice lodge with a hot tub.

tonyhawks23 · 22/01/2026 19:51

Ooo watching with interest as also need ideas but less expensive ones, inflatable nightclubs and Paris both out,I need cheap ideas but still fun!

RealReginaPhalange · 23/01/2026 14:31

Dp’s older but it’s still a big birthday… im giving him a local hot air balloon flight for us and our kids. (Just the two of us would have been cheaper!)

Previously I took him to a gig for a band he loves from back in the day.

My niece absolutely loved the Welsh zip line that’s the longest in the world I think - 1km? Book a premier in nearby and resolve to give him a night to remember before/after/both.

We were extremely brassic for my 40th and we just had a classic BYOB party at home. I cleaned up, put tea lights in jars, dug out a bottle of value vodka, bought long life orange juice and plenty of crisps, and cranked up the tunes. Absolutely brilliant night.

Just a nice planned day out. Renting a narrow boat for half a day and inviting close family and friends is something someone I knew did for a 40th and not too expensive.

PermanentTemporary · 23/01/2026 14:42

This is the zip wire place - seems to have expanded quite a lot -
here

I think the IMAX cinema in eg London is a great central thing for a day out - it’s not cheap but fun. Maybe also book onto one of the thousands of guided walks in London - there must be something that would interest him?

I gave my son a tour of his football teams stadium which went down quite well.

Imagine flying 500ft up at 100 mph...

Ask him. He's 40, not 4. He doesn't need a surprise. In fact, he may not want any fuss at all.

Lactarius · 23/01/2026 15:33

I'd go for an experience rather than an item. What about something like a blacksmithing experience day? It's how I got started with my hobby

The Mole holiday park

Finlake

West Midlands safari park

RealReginaPhalange · 23/01/2026 19:46

@Miranda65 do you really think it didnt cross my mind to ask him?😆 he never wants anything, he doesnt want to waste money (we are skint atm but i can figure something out), he has everything he needs, as long as i am happy and kids are healthy yada yada…but thanks for the suggestion 🫣

some good ideas here. @Moonnstarz i will check your recommendations out shortly!

@PermanentTemporary we used to live in london for 15 years, now not too far away but done a lot fun stuff there.

he has gained quite a lot of weight (never been petite but its not too good now), have some health issues, on antidepressants and in general not feeling to good with himself so i dont want anything to make him feel even worse about himself, most of the “experience” gifts are no no at the moment😒

I got my DP a fancy bbq for his 40th so we can do a bit more entertaining with friends and he was really pleased. I also considered a nice coffee machine. Would either of those work, or any other appliance that would be a treat for him?

crumpetswithcheeze · 23/01/2026 20:35

We met a couple doing a ‘day trip’ to Amsterdam and he was doing the A’dam swing as a 40th birthday gift.

Amsterdam would be a great idea! He used to smoke weed occasionally aaaages ago, we went there for a first trip as a couple, but he wouldnt enjoy going there and not being able to have a smoke…and he cant due to his work😖

@fassnk not sure if i can afford good barbecue but i will have a look, coffee machine is also not the bad idea, he did actually mention ages ago he would love one, the one which makes fancy coffee drinks😅 but i rejected as too many appliances on the counter. He got air fryer/speedi cooker from me couple of years ago and it came in handy although really hate how bulky it is

Can it make those fancy coffees from coffee shop? Lol. I am a nescafe girl but very occasionally likes an ice coffee with cream on top or some other costa/sturbacks choices.
