To think I can recreate 1986 for myself?

I’ve been going through a difficult stage mental health wise. 1986 was great for me because in the spring of 1986 I started my first ever diet and by the summer that year was definitely

“beach ready, babe!”

I’d gone from fat to normal weight. I also had no mental health issues or self esteem issues and felt in 1986 that now that I was slim I’d be happy, popular, successful in love and career.

Since 86 I developed Self Doubt for one reason and another.

Do you think I can recreate the spirit and conditions of 1986 so that I can

‘live my best life?’

I mean the year ends with a 6!!

Thank you for your advice - I really alleviate everyone’s responses on this

For me there was something magical about 1986. After a lifetime of abuse, there was FINALLY a shaft of light ..

That's so sad OP. I say go for it!

You can't get your youth back though unfortunately so maybe not the rara skirts, reversible Mickey Mouse jumpers or those t-shirts that changed colour when you got hot.
But listen to the music while you go out for a walk, have a lovely cup a tea and watch one of your fave 80's films.

One thing I hope you've learned though is that being slim won't magically make everything else in your life fall into place perfectly. It's not the be all and end all!

But everyone deserves to have hope OP, so I hope you have bucket loads of it this year and that it's another good one.

Can I join you. I was blonde, leggy and 8st7lb, loved my job, fabulous lifestyle, thought I was in love. It led up to Big Bang in the City. Such an exciting time and I loved 80s clothes. I was 26 in 1986 - those were the days!

You can try to recreate what you loved about it certainly @ClicketyBayey.

Yes you can definitely join me.! 🙌

Ah 1988 was a bad year for me .. but I think you’ve got the right idea ..!

I was 19 and very pleased with myself after losing weight and regaining a social life after losing a horrible boyfriend who made me feel old before my time. I remember dancing to The only way is up with my friends on my first night back on the town, and being so happy and hopeful.
Obviously my life's changed, but the idea of hitting bottom and bouncing back has always been a motivator.
My most recent 1988 was in 2020 when I lost weight (wish I could get over the link with weight and self actualisation, but I am what I am!) and got very fit and happy with my appearance at the ripe old age of 51. Got a promotion and did my house up. Back on the town again, though this time it's to 80s tribute bands with other old folks. Though sometimes my DD will take me out out and I feel like I'm young again.

1986 was my hopeful, ambitious year, the year I thought was the start of my life. Haha! Rightio..I made bad decision after bad decision by 1988-98.
My posting name is my anthem for my adult life, I made as many mistakes as my examples.
1980-86 were my highlight years.
I recreate with music, my Spotify lists, my film lists, my hobbies now reflect my interests from that time. Ironically if I had started them then my life could have been far more successful.

My leanness
my youth
my sense of hope …

No the past is gone. It was a long time ago. Have you had meaningful times since 86’ there is no particular time that I would like to re live. I’d love to be 25 again but then my children wouldn’t be in my life yet.
Start making positive changes now, live this year in a happier place.

grafittiartist · 22/01/2026 22:33

Great year for music!

Bikergran · 22/01/2026 22:35

Just accept that it might be harder, as a body 40 years older sometimes finds it less easy to shed fat.

What spirit and conditions are you even talking about? 1986 was 40 years ago.

Bog off don't remind me 🤦🏼‍♀️

If you can find a way for us all to go back to 1986 please, even for just a short time.

I was just a young child, oblivious to world events but remember some really good times and holidays around then. So yes I would like to go!

PersephoneSmith · 22/01/2026 22:37

1986 was a good year for me too, I was 16 😆 now I’m nearly 56, it’s just not happening!

I most definitely was fab at 40, but that was 16 years ago, I'm decidedly less fab at 56!
