What is wrong with our media?

Why are our media reporting what Donald Trump says as if it is reasonable or true? They are not the government so do not have to think about diplomacy. I cannot believe that he is still being portrayed as a normal leader!

You have to look at who owns them.

Locutus2000 · 21/01/2026 22:04

First post nails it.

First post nails it.

It's so fucking terrifying.

itsthetea · 21/01/2026 22:20

I don’t see them reporting him as reasonable or true though ? False premise

Lonelycrab · 21/01/2026 22:27

Which media are you talking about

Look at what goes unsaid, what is brushed off, what is allowed to go unchallenged....

BBCK · 22/01/2026 06:23

The TV news reported his words about how the US gave Greenland back to Denmark in his speech yesterday as if this were true without any real pushback and made very little of his repeated confusion between Greenland and Iceland.
When Biden was showing similar signs of confusion this was headline news!
I was horrified that the Venezuela incident was reported as if the kidnapping of a country’s leader was a reasonable move and now his threats to Greenland are being reported as a point for negotiation. Is this how Hitler’s foreign policy was reported in the 1930s?

Because he serves a purpose for them. Divide, confuse and conquer.

However I just read an article in the BBC fact checking his Davos rant. It countered many of his claims including that Iceland Greenland once belonged to the US after WW2.

WideOpenBeaches · 22/01/2026 06:33

Isn’t ‘he’ still suing the BBC?

bathsmat · 22/01/2026 06:35

Even the DM highlighted his Iceland/Greenland confusion.

Dgll · 22/01/2026 06:44

Unless you know him personally, your view of Trump is based off the media. You don't seem to be a fan, so they can't have been that nice about him.

ColdAsAWitches · 22/01/2026 06:49

I really don't agree. I think the media is (rightly) nothing but critical of Trump. At least on this side of the Atlantic.

Alternatively, you could use your eyes and ears, process the information and determine this yourself.

Really? Mirror called him a Fool in their headline.... but the Daily Mail headline "Trump Ive done a deal on my Ice... Sun and Express Don't even cover Trump.....

The media inc TV & Radio News is extremely restrained on their criticism of Trump.

They are covering it as if he is in full command of his faculties.

MushMonster · 22/01/2026 07:02

I have only ever heard his own cabinet talking like Trump is right, at least on the extreme statements and actions.
I must confess I never thought his second term would be this horrid shocker! I thought it would be more like the first one. I am in schock, not really sure if to believe what I read at times.....
But I have not come across media portraying him as normal. Some are more cautious than others with expressing views, but that is expected. They can be sued.

hattie43 · 22/01/2026 07:02

They are reporting him as a madman . I haven’t seen any reporters / commentators describe him as normal .

ColdAsAWitches · 22/01/2026 07:11

Sun and Express Don't even cover Trump.....

That's nonsense. The first thing you see on the Sun's webpage is a picture of Trump and the headline "Isle be nice". It's the lead story.
There's two pictures of Trump on the Express landing page, including the lead article.

The guardian fact checked it all in their live stream too.

And for the person who made comments about who owns the media, they don't have an owner or shareholders. They're owned by a trust.

Goldenbear · 22/01/2026 06:58

Alternatively, you could use your eyes and ears, process the information and determine this yourself.

The information that you are processing is coming to you from the media. They choose what to publish, what not to publish how much to edit out, what the headline is, who to interview and what to emphasise, how to entertain you. It isn't a secret.

fatcat2007 · 22/01/2026 07:50

I feel like the BBC has got a lot more cautious of him since he sued them and he looks a lot more reasonable on there these days.

BlackCatDiscoClub · 22/01/2026 07:50

There are lots of euphemisms I've noticed. Instead of rant, he 'muses'. When he goes off on a tangent he's in 'a contemplative mood'. We are not at war with the US and it is still a NATO ally, so the media aren't going to excoriate him. Remember that before Germany became a direct threat to the UK our government were indifferent about Hitler, seeing him as a global leader we might need to work with!

Edited

Not on their print front page headlines there isn't... i should have made that clear, both lead on "non stories"

Alexandra2001 · 22/01/2026 08:08

Even in 1935/6 the UK was designing and building new single seat fighters and re arming... whilst also talking to Hitler.

USA a NATO ally?

Do you honestly think if Putin attacked a Baltic state, the USA would help? they'd sell us weapons but nothing else....
